I have fond memories of Christmas shopping with my family as a child. I enjoyed the challenge of keeping my parents’ gifts a secret. It was hard to buy gifts without them seeing. Everyone in my family bought gifts for each other and covered them in ribbons and bows and colorful paper. We placed them under the Christmas tree and waited until the big day.

Christmas morning was full of excitement. We were so eager to see our gifts that we usually did not sleep well the night before. Even before our parents were awake, we would jump out of bed and go see what was under the tree.

Soon we would be tearing open the presents.

So picking a gift is a big deal and requires knowing and loving the person you’re giving it to. You need to know the person’s tastes and find something the person doesn’t already have. This can be quite a challenge. Often it’s wise to provide a receipt in case the person needs to return the gift.

In 2000, French archaeologist Franck Goddio and his team found the preserved remains of Thonis-Heracleion and Canopus, two ancient Egyptian cities, on the sea floor near the mouth of the Nile River. The team painstakingly dug the cities out from mountains of sand that had settled over them. Their efforts yielded some incredible discoveries, such as a five-meter-tall statue. A stele, or large stone monument, records the city’s name and information about laws, such as tax regulations. And 69 ships lay buried in the same bay – the largest group of ancient ships ever found.

These cities were built on a foundation of soft clay. As their populations grew, the weight of people and homes compressed the clay. In A.D. 800 the ground below the city collapsed, causing people to flee. The ground collapsed again some time later, and over the course of 1,000 years, the land sank under the waves.

When Goddio and his team discovered the remains of the cities, they might have been tempted to claim ownership of their finds. Legally, they could only have done so if the discovery had been made in international waters. In this case, the treasures were found in Egyptian waters; thus, they clearly belonged to that country.

Since then, many of the items have been displayed in the Egyptian Museum of Cairo. Egyptian law forbids the export of these ancient objects, but the museum has been happy to loan them to art institutes in other countries. As a result, in 2016, the British Museum in London was able to mount a huge show entitled "Sunken cities: Egypt's lost worlds." It featured many of the finest objects that Goddio and his crew discovered.

(adapted from Studio Classroom, December 28-29 ) 37. What does the article mainly deal with?

D. A famous Egyptian archaeologist

38. Which of the following can best replace “compressed”?

39. What can be inferred about the “Sunken cities” exhibit?

A. The exhibition failed to attract visitors.

B. Most of the exhibits were borrowed items.

C. Issues arose over ownership of the items.

D. Egypt profited a lot from the exhibition.

40. According to the article, what is true about Thonis-Heracleion and Canopus?

A. The inhabitants were brutal barbarians.

B. Heavy taxes were imposed.

C. The cities grew increasingly populous.

D. The sunken ships explained the cities’ demise.
