(A) Fried insects are 11 as a delicious dish in some parts of the world—just as roast mice make a perfect meal in other parts. Many of us, however, would 12 these foods, as we are not used to them. Similarly, horse meat that

13 as a delicacy in certain areas of France might never be acceptable to most Americans, even those who are so hungry that they “could eat a horse.”

What makes people choose certain foods 14 others, then? After looking into this issue, experts have discovered several factors. Among these factors, customs as well as traditions are the major ones, and 15 geography.

According to Gungor, there are many small “boxes” in men’s brains, and one of 17 is named the “nothing box.” When men are under pressure, they go to the “nothing box” to relax. Thus, it is not necessary for most men to talk about their problems with friends. Gungor’s 18 amazed me because sharing feelings is so important to women, especially when we are in bad moods. I couldn’t wait 19 more.

After viewing some more films, I had learned a lot about Dr. Amen’s “brain scans” of both sexes. On the whole,

Stories about ordinary individual people tend to attract far more public attention than political events do. To increase the sales of their newspaper or magazine, journalists may try every 22 to explore these stories. A.

Have you ever heard someone use the phrase “once in a blue moon?” People use this expression to describe something that they don’t do very often, or something that rarely happens. For example, someone might say that he tries to avoid eating sweets because they may not be healthy for their bodies, but will eat chocolate “once in a blue moon.” Or someone who does not usually like to go to the beach might say “I visit the shore once in a blue moon.” While many people use this phrase, not everyone knows its origin and the meaning behind it. The first thing to know is that the moon itself is never actually blue. This is just an expression. The phrase “blue moon” actually has to do with the shape of the moon, not the color.

As the moon travels around the earth, it appears to change shape. For example, when we can see a small part of the moon, it is called a crescent moon. As crescent is a shape that looks like the tip of the fingernail. When we cannot see the moon at all, it is called a new moon. When we can see the entire moon, it is called a full moon. Usually, there is only one full moon every month. Sometimes, however, there will be two full moons in one month. When this happens, the second full moon is called a “blue moon.”

Over the next 20 years, there will only be 15 blue moons. As you can see, a blue moon is a very rare event. This fact has led people to use the expression “once in a blue moon” to describe other very rare events in their lives. So next time when you hear people use this phrase, just realize that it has nothing to do with color; rather, it is all about the very rare chance associated with the occasion of the second full moon happening in a month.

26. When doe a blue moon happen in nature?

(A) When we can only see a small part of the moon.

(B) When the moon has a blue color.

(C) When we cannot see the moon at all.

(D) When there are two full moons in one month.

27. As described in paragraph 2, which of the following is another example of something that has a crescent shape?

(A) Your thumb (B) A distant star (C) The letter “C”

(D) A blue moon

28. Based on the final paragraph, we can conclude that over the next 20 years, a blue moon will happen . (A) once a year

(B) less than once a year

(3)

(C) more than once a year (D) only once

29. Which of the following would be the best example of someone doing something “once in a blue moon?”

(A) Mary likes to go to the mountains every weekend.----Mary goes to the mountain once in a blue moon.

(B) Tom scarcely remembers to take out the trash.----Tom takes out the trash once in a blue moon.

(C) Cindy hates to do the dishes. Nevertheless, she does it daily. ----Cindy does the dishes once in a blue moon.

(D) Ming sometimes forgets to do his homework.----Ming forgets to do his homework once in a blue moon.

B: It can be honestly said that nobody really gets delight from the ideas of taking examinations. However, in all the

thousands of years that exams have been in existence, no one has really come up with a suitable substitute for them. Perhaps the reason for this is that, in fact, exams test more than students’ knowledge. More important, they show how students can apply knowledge under pressure. Many examinees will fail not because they don’t know the subject but because they can’t respond to questions under such pressures as time limitations. The cause of the French Revolution in 30 minutes might frighten some people, but I somehow always managed to muddle through such questions. What I was never able to cope with, were questions such as, “if it takes six men 14 days to dig a hole, how many days would it take eight men to dig the same hole?” Even today I can feel my mind going blank. Why would eight men want to dig a hole? What would happen if one of them had only one arm? If it were up to me, I would have buried them all in a hole. But, I promise you, believe it or not, the day will come when you will take your last exam and the words “Time’s up, please put down your pens,” which up to now have held such dread for you, will take on a whole new meaning.

30. According to this passage, why has there no substitute for examinations been found?

(A) Because people like taking exams.

(B) Because most people enjoy history.

(C) Because they examine things other than knowledge.

(D) Because they have been in existence for thousands of years.

31. Many times people fail exams because . (A) they are too relaxed

(B) they can’t answer under pressure (C) they don’t like math

(D) they don’t know the material

32. The author found mental arithmetic ? (A) interesting

(B) intelligible (C) ridiculously easy (D) extremely confusing

33. What does the author promise?

(A) That one day all examinations will be abolished.

(B) That words will acquire new meanings after graduation.

(C) That one day you will take your last examination.

(D) That one day someone will find a better way to test students’ knowledge.
