Part 1: choose the correct answer to fill in each blank.

Wednesday, January 13, 1943 Dearest Kitty,

This morning I was constantly interrupted. 15 I haven’t been able to finish a single thing I’ve begun.

We have a new recreation, namely, filling packages 16 powdered gravy. The gravy is one of Gies & Co.’s products. Mr. Kugler hasn’t been able to find anyone else to do the job. Besides, our wages are lower. It’s the kind of work they do in prisons. It’s incredibly boring and makes us dizzy and giggly.

A. leading up to B. has come a long way C. came into being D. blown away

A. rounds up B. keep it out of C. looking forward to D. torn apart

Terrible things are happening outside. At any time of night and day, poor, helpless people are being dragged out of their homes. They’re allowed to take only a rucksack and a little cash with them, and even then, they’re robbed 17 their possessions on the way. Families are torn apart; men, women, and children are separated. Children come home from school to find that their parents have disappeared. Women return from shopping to find their houses sealed and their families gone. The Christians in Holland are also living in fear because their sons are being sent to Germany. Everyone is scared. Every night, hundreds of planes pass over Holland 18 their way to German cities, to sow their bombs 19 German soil. Every hour, hundreds—or maybe even thousands—of people are being killed in Russia and Africa. No one can keep out of the conflict; the entire world is 20 war.

Even though the Allies are doing better, the end is nowhere 21 sight.

As for us, we’re quite fortunate—luckier than millions of people. It’s quiet and safe here, and we’re using our money to buy food. We’re so selfish that we talk about “after the war” and look forward to new clothes and shoes, when actually we should lay aside every penny to help others when the war is over and save whatever we can.

The children in this neighborhood run around in thin shirts and wooden clogs. They have no coats, no socks, no caps, and no one to help them. Gnawing 22 a carrot to ease their hunger pain, they walk from their cold houses through cold streets to an even colder classroom. Things have gotten so bad in Holland that crowds of children stop passers-by in the streets to beg for a piece of bread.

I could spend hours telling you about the suffering the war has caused, but I’d only make myself more miserable. All we can do is 23 , as calmly as possible, 24 it to end. Jews and Christians alike are waiting; the whole world is waiting, and many are waiting for death.

Yours, Anne 15. A. Because B. Because of C. As a result of D. As a result,

Do you know that some operations today are carried out by robots rather than human surgeons? Because certain operations require a lot of small and precise actions, which sometimes cannot be done by human hands, robotic surgeons have been developed to perform such operations. Robotic surgeons cannot replace human surgeons completely. However, they do help a lot on performing some difficult operations.

One of the most famous robotic surgical systems is the da Vinci Surgical System. The da Vinci System is made up of a robot with four arms and a TV screen with a control panel. Three of the robotic surgeons’ arms hold surgical instruments and the fourth contains a camera, which sends images to the TV screen on the control panel. A human surgeon can sit at the control panel, watching the three-dimensional images inside of the patient’s body and controlling the robot at the same time.

(3)

Not everyone agrees on the benefits of using robotic surgeons. Some people worry that robots are not able to realize if they are making a mistake. These people feel that human surgeons are still more reliable when compared with robots. As a result, these people are particularly worried by the prediction that robots in the future might perform operations without any human surgeon involved at all. Other people point out the high cost of these robots, as well as the extra time and money taken to train staff to use them.

Nevertheless, the technology of robotic surgical systems is still fast-growing. The most important advantage, say supporters, is that a robotic hand does not shake like a human hand. That’s why a robot is able to perform operations more quickly and precisely. This means that more operations can be carried out every day, with a higher rate of success. With new systems appearing on the market each year, it seems that robotic surgeons, in spite of negative criticisms, are still the surgeons of the future.

25 The article is mainly about .

A. how to control robots to perform difficult operations B. when robotic surgeons will take the place of humans C. the possibility of substituting robots for human surgeons D. the reason why there is a risk using robotic surgeons

26 According to the article, robotic surgeons are developed to . A. help patients recover more quickly

B. supervise human surgeons’ mistakes C. save the cost and time of operations D. do smaller and more precise actions

27 Which of the following statements about the da Vinci Surgical System is true?

A. It is made up of a robot with four arms.

B. It guides a human surgeon during surgery.

C. It is smart enough to finish an operation on its own.

D. Its camera sends instructions to the surgical instruments.

28 Some critics worry that .

A. many human surgeons are going to lose their jobs B. robots have trouble realizing they have made mistakes C. no human surgeons are able to control robotic surgeons D. robotic hands may shake compared with human hands Part 2:

Suite Française, written by Irène Némirovsky, gives a detailed description of her life in France during World War II. It wasn’t published until the author had been dead for more than sixty years. When the novel finally appeared in 2004, it became a best-seller, partly because of the dramatic life story of Irène Némirovsky.

Irène Némirovsky was born to a rich Jewish family in Russia. To escape the 1917 Russian Revolution, the Némirovskys moved to Paris, where the young Irène soon became a famous writer. In 1926, Irène married a banker, and they had two daughters. Even though the couple tried to protect its family from discrimination(歧視), they couldn’t escape the rise of the Nazis in the 1930s.

(4)

Their situation became dangerous when the Nazis occupied Paris in 1940. Irène and her family hid in a distant village, but even there, they were required to wear the yellow stars that marked them as Jews. To record their difficult experiences in France, Irène wrote down what she saw, heard, and experienced.

Unfortunately, Irène Némirovsky didn’t live long enough to finish the huge novel that she had started. She was arrested by the Nazis and died in a concentration camp in 1942. Irène’s husband also died, but her two daughters survived. It was not until the 1990s, however, that Irène’s elder daughter finally read her mother’s writings and realized that her mother had written a fine novel.

Suite Française is a story about innocent people caught in a terrible time. It stands on its own as a work of art, but knowing Irène Némirovsky’s personal tragic tale makes its description of courage and loss more touching.

29 This article is mainly about .

A. the miserable lives that the Jews had to live during World War II in Paris B. how Irène Némirovsky’s daughters found their mother’s writings

C. Némirovsky’s life story and the novel she left behind

D. innocent people being caught in a terrible time in both Russia and France 30 Which of the following is true about Irène Némirovsky?

A. She was born to a poor Jewish family.

B. She became famous as a writer after she died.

C. She moved to Paris to escape the 1917 Russian Revolution.

D. She died after she was released from a concentration camp.

31 According to the article, the book Suite Française .

A. gives a detailed description of Irène Némirovsky’s life in Russia B. became an immediate best-seller during World War II

C. was published by Irène Némirovsky’s husband after she died

D. moves many readers with Irène Némirovsky’s courage and her loss.
