Quantum physics is the study of matter and energy at molecular and microscopic levels.

It is not only rebuking commonly held laws of physics but also offering new breakthroughs in science as well as __21__ for modifying human behavior. The study of physics is a relatively new field. Gaining technology to measure with better __22__ the phenomena happening in the universe, scientists discovered strange occurrences. Whereas there were laws of physics governing large bodies of matter, these laws didn’t apply to subatomic material. Actually, the act of observing something influences its physical processes and what direction it will go into, making the universe not __23__ but filled with a series of probabilities. That is, reality __24__ with the observer.

Quantum physics is enticing to many people, with its new philosophy that reality is relative. Believing that they are in control of their lives, supporters say that __25__

something to be true increases the probability of its happening. Thus, workshops, motivational books, and movies are made on the subject, using some of the ideas of quantum physics as the backbone of their teachings and assumptions.

(A) appeal (B) morality (C) patented (D) reaffirming (E) ineligible (AB) strain (AC) consideration

In medicine, a prosthesis is an artificial extension that replaces a missing body part. Within science fiction, and, more recently, within the scientific community, there has been __26__

given to using advanced prostheses to replace healthy body parts with artificial mechanisms and systems to improve function. The __27__ and desirability of such technologies are being debated. Body parts such as legs, arms, hands, feet, and others can be replaced.

In early 2008, Oscar Pistorius, the “Blade Runner” of South Africa, was briefly ruled __28__ to compete in the 2008 Summer Olympics because his prosthetic limbs were said to give him an unfair advantage over runners who had ankles. One researcher found that his limbs used twenty-five percent less energy than those of an able-bodied runner moving at the same speed. This ruling was overturned on equality, with the committee __29__ that the overall set of advantages and disadvantages of Pistorius’ limbs had not been considered. Pistorius did not join the South African team for Olympics, but went on to __30__ to the 2008 Summer

Paralympics, and has been ruled qualified for any future Olympics.

____31____ The author Amy Chua, who is Chinese-American and a Yale law

professor, pushes her children to get straight A’s and forces them to spend hours each day practicing piano and violin. ____32____ She refuses them playdates and sleepovers and TV and video games, and she demands unstinting obedience and devotion to family.

____33____ Regardless of her daughters’ protests, Chua persists with her iron hand. “You have to be hated sometimes by someone you love and who hopefully loves you,” she says.

____34____

In spite of the obvious limits of Chua’s appeal, her publisher is clearly counting on her message finding wide resonance among American moms worn out from trying to do everything right for kids who mimic Disney Channel-style disrespect for parents, spend hours a day on Facebook, and pick at their lovingly prepared food. ____35 ____

(A) Her goal is to produce tougher, more resilient and of course higher-performing kids.

(B) They are not allowed to pursue loser activities like playing the drums.

(C) This parenting memoir clearly aspires to become a battle plan for a new age of re-empowered, captain-of-the-ship motherhood.

(D) All of these lead, unsurprisingly, to no small amount of crying, screaming, and general tension.

(E) What the “Tiger Mother” embraces is the Chinese way of parenting instead, which stresses respect, self-discipline and, above all, results.
