II. Reading Comprehension: 30%

Read the passages below and then answer the questions that follow.

Jupiter is the largest and the most massive planet and is fifth in order of distance from the sun. It is well placed for observation for several months in every year and on average is the brightest of the planets apart from Venus, though for relatively brief periods Mars may outshine it. Jupiter’s less than 10-hour rotation period gives it the shortest day in the solar system insofar as the principal planets are concerned. There are no true seasons on Jupiter because the axial inclination to the perpendicular of the orbital plane is only just over 3°--less than that for any other planet.

The most famous mark on Jupiter is the Great Red Spot. It has shown variations in both intensity and color, and at times it has been invisible, but it always returns after a few years. At its greatest extent it may be 40,000 kilometers long and 14,000

kilometers wide, so its surface area is greater than that of Earth. Though the latitude of the Red Spot varies little, it drifts about in longitude. Over the past century the total longitudinal drift has amounted to approximately 1200°. The latitude is generally very close to -22°. It was once thought that the Red Spot might be a solid or semisolid body floating in Jupiter’s outer gas. However, the Pioneer and Voyager results have refuted that idea and proven the Red Spot to be a phenomenon of Jovian meteorology. Its longevity may well be due to its exceptional size, but there are signs that it is

decreasing in size, and it may not be permanent. Several smaller red spots have been seen occasionally but have not lasted.

21. According to the passage, Jupiter has the shortest day among the principal planets because

(A) its rotation period is shorter than 10 hours (B) the axial inclination is only just over 3°

(C) it is on average the brightest of all the planets (D) there is the interference of the Great Red Spot 22. According to the passage, Mars outshines Jupiter

(A) on a regular basis (B) from time to time (C) every several months

(D) less often than any other planet 23. The passage would be of most interest to

(A) students of anthropology (B) geologists

(C) mathematicians

(4)

(D) amateur astronomers

24. It can be inferred from this passage that Jupiter’s Great Red Spot (A) will become brighter with time

(B) will one day vanish (C) will continue expanding (D) is made of floating gases

25. The word “intensity” in line 9 could best be replaced with (A) brilliance

(B) density (C) visibility (D) surface area

However important we may consider school life to be, there is no gainsaying the fact that children spend more time at home than in the classroom. Therefore, the great influence of parents cannot be ignored or discounted by the teacher. They can become strong allies of the school personnel or they can consciously or unconsciously hinder and thwart curricular objectives.

Administrators have been aware of the need to keep parents apprised of the newer methods used in schools. Many principals have conducted workshops explaining such matters as the reading readiness program, manuscript writing, and developmental mathematics.

Moreover, the classroom teacher, with the permission of the supervisors, can also play an important role in enlightening parents. The many interviews carried on during the year as well as new ways of reporting pupils’ progress can significantly aid in achieving a harmonious interplay between school and home.

To illustrate, suppose that a father has been drilling Junior in arithmetic processes night after night. In a friendly interview, the teacher can help the parent sublimate his natural paternal interest into productive channels. He might be persuaded to let Junior participate in discussing the family budget, buying the food, using a yardstick or measuring cup at home, setting the clock, calculating mileage on a trip, and engaging in scores of other activities that have a mathematical basis.

If the father follows the advice, it is reasonable to assume that he will soon realize his son is making satisfactory progress in mathematics and, at the same time, enjoying the work.

Too often, however, teachers’ conference with parents are devoted to petty

accounts of children’s misdemeanors, complaints about laziness and poor work habits, and suggestion for penalties and rewards at home.

What is needed is a more creative approach in which the teacher, as a professional

(5)

adviser, plants ideas in parents’ minds for the best utilization of the many hours that the child spends out of the classroom.

In this way, the school and the home join forces in fostering the fullest development of youngsters’ capacities.

26. The central idea conveyed in the above passage is that

(A) home training is more important than school training because a child spends so many hours with his parents

(B) teachers can and should help parents understand and further the objectives of the school

(C) parents unwittingly have hindered and thwarted curricular objectives

(D) there are many ways in which the mathematics program can be implemented at home

27. It can reasonably be inferred that the author

(A) is satisfied with present relationships between home and school

(B) feels that the traditional program in mathematics is slightly superior to the developmental program

(C) believes that schools are lacking in guidance personnel

(D) feels that parent-teacher interviews can be made much more constructive than they are at present

28. The author implies that

(A) participation in interesting activities related to a school subject improves one’s achievement in that area

(B) school principals do more than their share in interpreting the curriculum to the parents

(C) only a small part of the school day should be set apart for drilling in arithmetic

(D) teachers should occasionally make home visits to parents 29. The author’s primary purpose in writing this passage is to

(A) tell parents to pay more attention to the guidance of teachers in the matter of educational activities in the home

(B) urge teachers and school administrators to make use of a much underused resource—the parents

(C) improve the teaching of mathematics

(D) brainwash parents into doing the best thing for their child’s education 30. The author would most approve of which of the following parental activities to

assist in the learning of composition and writing skills?

(A) One hour of supervised writing exercise nightly

(6)

(B) Spelling words out loud with the child while washing the dishes (C) Encouraging the child to write letters to relatives

(D) Reviewing all the child’s written schoolwork

Edgar Allan Poe was a writer and poet born in the United States. His writing helped spearhead the American Romantic movement and is famous for its dreary, macabre, stylistic elements. Poe is known for his literary work, but much of Poe’s life was actually spent editing and writing in the academic realm of literary theory, which eventually led him to formulate his own ideas on poetry and art. In Poe’s opinion, all works of art should aspire to have a single effect on the intended audience; only a single emotion should be conveyed via any piece of art, regardless of the

medium—whether it is written, performed, or painted. This led Poe to champion stories published in magazines and short lyrics poems. He did not put stock in longer works, especially epic poems, as they usually sought to have multiple effects on a reader. In addition, Poe’s Romantic leanings compelled him to argue that art should be produced for its own sake, contrary to other thinkers of the time who were arguing that art should serve a higher purpose, like instilling values in the audience or portraying moral lessons.

Poe is also famous for his lyric poetry, composed in a structured pentameter that used rhythm and repetition to create dreadful moods. The Raven is perhaps the most famous poem by Poe and follows a narrator that laments over the death of his one true love, Lenore. In accordance with Poe’s literary theory, the poem does not seek to reconcile the situation in order to provide a moral lesson. The Raven conveys a feeling of unavoidable hopelessness, coupled with an eerie mood, which became Poe’s

defining literary style.

In the same vein, Poe’s short stories couple spooky, dark elements with a feeling of hopelessness. Many of the themes are tied to a feeling of loss and a fear of one’s inevitable demise. The Fall of the House of Usher was one of his most famous stories.

Typical of the gothic genre in general, were scenes of a decaying mansion accompany the eerie elements through the story. For Poe, The Fall of the House of Usher was an exploration into the feeling of human fear. It is not so much of a horror story as it is a tale of psychological paranoia. Several other stories by Poe explore similar themes and like The Fall of the House of Usher, never become overtly violent or bloody.

Poe’s writing was received poorly in America due to his public image as a

drunkard and gambler. However, he has received more critical attention recently, and is now considered to be one of the great American writers of his time.

(7)

31. Why does the writer mention painting in paragraph 1?

(A) To illustrate Poe’s passion for all things artistic

(B) To substantiate the claim that Poe dabbled in many arts (C) To provide a limitation on the application of Poe’s theory (D) To explain the extent of Poe’s theory about art

32. Which of the sentences below best expresses the essential information in the underlined sentence in the passage?

(A) Unlike other thinkers of the time, Poe argued that art should strive to only convey a single emotion, not instill the audience with values or teach them a moral lesson.

(B) Teaching moral lessons and conveying values were of paramount importance in Poe’s literary theory, as was the desire to convey a single emotion.

(C) Most thinkers of the time agreed with Poe’s argument that a single virtue should be conveyed by a work of art, along with providing the audience with important ethical lessons.

(D) According to Poe, art exists to serve society by conveying beauty, emotion, and moral and ethical virtues—an idea that ran counter to most of his contemporaries.

33. According to the passage, all of the following are true of Poe’s literary theory EXCEPT

(A) it posited that epic poetry did not adhere to adequate artistic standards (B) it recognized that performed art should be categorized separately (C) it argued that a work of art should work to invoke a single emotion (D) it applied to all art forms, not just pieces of literature

34. What can be inferred from paragraph 3 about gothic tales?

(A) They were incredibly violent and bloody.

(B) They described romantic adventures in joyful surroundings.

(C) They explored what was like to be dead among the living.

(D) They often included decomposing buildings in frightening settings.

35. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true?

(A) The Fall of the House of Usher is characteristic of Poe’s short stories, which are macabre explorations of inevitable demise.

(B) Poe’s poetry uses repetition and pentameter to convey dreary, spooky moods, as illustrated by The Raven.

(C) Much of Poe’s life was spent drinking and gambling, which characterized his public image but invigorated his writing.

(D) Poe argued that any piece of art should exist to invoke a single emotion in the audience, which he sought to do with his writing.

Aristotle was among the first to define what constitutes poetry. In his Poetics, he delineated three genres of poetry: tragedy, comedy, and epic verse. Others have described poetry as a form of literature intended to express the beautiful or sublime without a narrative. (43.____________________) However, poems, especially modern poems, are quite disparate in how they use these elements.

(44.____________________) Greek poets, such as Homer and Sappho, first

(9)

utilized the metric system. Beginning with the Greeks, many poets have favored what is known as iambic pentameter. This is a meter with five iambs, wherein each iamb consists of an unstressed syllable followed by a stressed syllable, resulting in a total of ten syllables. (45.____________________) For example, the meter in Spanish poetry is determined by the positioning of the final accent in a poetic line. Accordingly, a line with the last accent on the seventh syllable in Spanish is called an octosyllable,

whether it has seven, eight, or nine syllables.

(46. ____________________) Modern poets often choose to set aside recognizable structures, such as meter and rhyme, and instead use free verse.

Additionally, they may rely on visual designs or incorporate elements of prose.

(47.____________________) Twentieth-century poets fully developed these trends and rejected a great deal of the customary structures of poetry, preferring to invent their own forms of expression.

A. Poems traditionally employed a specific meter, or sound pattern.

B. During the historical Victorian era, poets experimented with unpatterned rhymed verse.

C. The English language lends itself naturally to iambic rhythms, but other meters populate poetry in different languages.

D. In addition, poetry is defined by features such as use of meter, rhythm, alliteration, and a musical effect.

E. Poetry has evolved tremendously throughout the centuries, and the poetic forms applied in modern times are far more varied and flexible.

Tucked high in the Qin Ling Mountains of central China, a nimble primate with a peculiar mug has conquered a pitiless landscape. The golden snub-nosed monkey is one of five related species—__48__ of once widespread populations whose ranges were squeezed by climate change after the last ice age. Enduring groups, living in territorial bands that can top 400 animals, are being squeezed again by logging, human settlement, and hunters wanting meat, bones (said to have medicinal properties), and luxurious fur. Many have been pushed into high-altitude isolation, where they leap across branches, __49__ icy rivers, and weather long winters at nearly 10,000 feet, __50__ by that coveted coat.

About 20,000 of the golden variety remain on Earth. Some 4,000 inhabit the mountainous region where Chinese officials set up the Zhouzhi National Nature Reserve to protect the species. Living both in and out of reserve boundaries,

(10)

Rhinopithecus roxellana, whose Latin name was allegedly __51__ by the snub-nosed concubine of a 1500s sultan, has made great adaptations to survive, __52__ on low-protein lichens and bark when trees are bare. Large social networks help __53__

predators, like clouded leopards.
