The dodo was a large flightless bird that was found only on the island of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean. The dodo is commonly mentioned when it comes to animal extinction, since it is the first animal whose extinction occurs during the recorded human history. What’s more, biologists also consider that the bird becomes extinct mainly because of human activities.

The dodo was said to have been discovered by the Dutch around the early 1600s. How the bird got its name was not clear. Some experts suggest that the name “dodo” comes from the Portuguese word

“doudo,” which means “fool” or “crazy.” Still some others consider that the name is related to the bird’s call, which sounds like “doo-doo.” Generally, the image of the dodo is a fat, stupid bird. In the English language, “dodo” even becomes a word used to describe a person that isn’t too bright-just like the bird. According to biologists, to survive the dry season when food is not enough, the dodo has to eat enough seeds and fruit during the wet season. That’s why it eats so much and looks fat.

The dodo became extinct around the mid-to-late 17th century, a little more than one century after it was discovered. The dodo’s extinction was more likely to result from human activities, which destroy their natural habitat. Early settlers on the island destroyed the dodo’s natural habitat and introduced new animals that either attacked the dodo or destroyed their nests on the ground.

The last sighting of a dodo was in 1681. Its disappearance was the first official extinction of a species in recorded history. Because of this, the dodo has become a symbol of extinction. Gone but not forgotten, expressions like “dead as a dodo” or “gone the way of the dodo” are still used today to describe things that are or will soon be lost forever.

46. “Gone the way of the dodo” are used today to describe things that are . (A) stupid (B) recorded (C) lost (D) crazy
