Can you imagine your life without your senses? We are sensory beings, and even taking away a __26__ sense can mean a major blow to a person’s life. We __27__ each morning without a thought that we’re going to be able to see, hear, taste, smell, and feel our way around the world.

Imagine opening your eyes one morning to nothing but blackness. You don’t even know where your eyes __28__, and you would hastily call out to someone for help, saying you’ve gone blind. What would you do at that point, if you couldn’t hear your own voice?

Taking away one sense would be __29__, but taking away two would be even worse. You can __30__ hear; your voice makes no sound, and you aren’t sure if it is working at all.

Suddenly, your senses of smell and taste are gone. With these two senses ceasing to __31__, food becomes a very boring thing. That enjoyment is now just a matter of feeding your body in order to __32__. Finally, when you find those senses have __33__ gone away, you are left with only one way to know the outside world.

You are down to your last sense, being able to touch. It finally goes away as well, and you are still conscious. Had it not been for your senses, you would have had no way of knowing what is going on in the world around you. You can try to communicate, but you don’t know __34__

your arms are moving or your voice is making any sound. Without your senses, you understand __35__ it is like to be alone in the universe. That, finally, is the importance of senses.

V. Reading Comprehension 20% (每題 2 分)

As E-commerce has become a global economic trend, people are buying more products than ever before through the Internet. According to the statistics of AC Nielsen Corporation, fifty- three percent of Taiwanese have bought something electronically, which makes Taiwan the second largest place worldwide in terms of the number of online shoppers. Store owners are worried that the growing amount of online sales will hurt their businesses. This has led traditional stores to seek new ways to keep their customers loyal.

Experts say that traditional stores can keep their customers by selling goods that buyers may want to see and taste, or feel the material and try on before purchasing. The stores can also offer services to instantly set up or repair electronic products. In addition, stores can offer things that are difficult to ship, or provide goods to buyers more quickly than online stores. Experts say that traditional stores offer the unique social experiences and personal interactions that most people enjoy. A lot of emotions can occur in the final buying decision. Are you worried that you are not attractive enough? Or are you worried about getting or looking old? Many people are. Some of them are so desperate to look younger than their actual age that they use cosmetic surgery in order to become more attractive. However, nowadays, people have a better and safer choice—“Botox (肉毒桿菌)” for short.

Since 2000, the number of Botox users worldwide has increased to 2.8 million. It is safe, relatively painless, and most important of all, it works fast. What then is Botox? It is a chemical that comes from a form of food poisoning called botulism, which causes serious effect such as paralysis. For example, botulism can kill by stopping one's respiratory (呼吸的) muscles from working. One dies simply because one can't breathe. It's no surprise that Botox is also a muscle- stopper. But it paralyzes to beautify, not to kill.

Botox is used through injection. People who want to get rid of the lines and wrinkles around their eyes, mouth or neck can get Botox injected to those areas. The chemical then stops the muscles on the face and neck from moving or contracting. It actually paralyzes one's muscles and thus creates wrinkle-free features.

Unfortunately, the effect of Botox doesn't last long. One has to keep getting injections once every three months to look fresh and young. However, too much Botox can be harmful too, and doctors warn that an overdose of Botox can cause droopy eyelids, raised eyebrows, and loss of facial expression. But Botox shouldn't present any serious threat to those who want to rejuvenate themselves if taken moderately and wisely. For now, their motto should simply be “Just Botox it.”

45. Compared to cosmetic surgery, Botox injection _______.

(A) works slower (B) is more expensive (C) has no side effects (D) is relatively painless 46. According to this passage, how many times should an aged woman get Botox injections a year to keep her younger than her actual age?

(A) 1. (B) 2.8. (C) 4. (D) 14.

47.The word “rejuvenate” in the last paragraph can be best replaced by _______.

(A) refresh (B) deteriorate (C) purchase (D) distribute 48.Which of the following statements is correct?

(A) Nowadays, cosmetic surgery is more popular than Botox injection.

(B) Those who consume food with botulism die of serious heart attack immediately.

(C) Improper use of Botox injection may lead to weird facial expression.

(D) Botox injection enables people to breathe better so as to become more attractive.

49. We can infer from the passage that Botox injection _______.

(A) will soon be replaced by cosmetic surgery (B) can be harmful, if people don't use it properly (C) is suitable for athletes to strengthen their muscles

(D) serves as a powerful weapon in defeating enemies in wars
