EXTERNAL MERCHANDISE TRADE STATISTICS

DECEMBER/2012 No. 12

Total merchandise export for December 2012 amounted to MOP683 million, down by 7.0% year-on- year, of which value of re-exports (MOP492 million) and domestic exports (MOP190 million) decreased by 3.3% and 15.4% respectively. Total merchandise import amounted to MOP6.62 billion, up by 2.9% year-on- year. Merchandise trade deficit widened to MOP5.94 billion for December 2012.

In the fourth quarter of 2012, total value of merchandise export (MOP2.01 billion) and merchandise import (MOP18.82 billion) increased by 4.8% and 5.3% respectively year-on-year, resulting in a trade deficit of MOP16.81 billion.

For the whole year of 2012, total value of merchandise export increased by 17.1% year-on-year to MOP8.16 billion, mainly due to a 28.2% increase in re-exports, but domestic exports decreased by 4.4%.

Total value of merchandise import grew by 13.9% to MOP70.93 billion over 2011.

Merchandise trade deficit widened by 13.5% year-on-year to MOP62.77 billion in 2012; the exports/imports ratio that reflects the situation of import and export balance stood at 11.5%, up slightly by 0.3 percentage points year-on-year. For the whole year of 2012, total value of external merchandise trade amounted to MOP79.09 billion, up by 14.2% compared with MOP69.26 billion in 2011.

In December 2012, exports of Textiles & garments declined by 25.4% year-on-year, of which value of Non-knitted or non-crocheted garments and Textile fabrics decreased by 31.7% and 51.6%

respectively. Exports of Non-textiles dropped by 3.9% year-on-year, of which value of Articles for casino slid by 71.9%.

In 2012, exports of Textiles & garments fell by 21.3% year-on-year to MOP1.05 billion; meanwhile, exports of Non-textiles grew by 26.2% to MOP7.11 billion, with that of Machines & apparatus, parts &

accessories thereof and Travel goods & handbags soaring by 127.1% and 110.1% respectively.

Analysed by destination, merchandise export to Hong Kong (MOP4.10 billion) and Mainland China (MOP1.37 billion) in 2012 increased by 31.7% and 24.7% respectively year-on-year, while export to the USA (MOP507 million) and the EU (MOP316 million) decreased by 8.7% and 17.7% respectively.

In December 2012, total merchandise import amounted to MOP6.62 billion, up by 2.9% year-on-year, with that of Fuels & lubricants rising by 16.9%, but that of Raw materials & semi-manufactures dropping by 2.6%.

In 2012, total value of merchandise import grew by 13.9% year-on-year to MOP70.93 billion, with that of Consumer goods (MOP43.36 billion) and Capital goods (MOP13.16 billion) rising by 12.3% and 21.5%

respectively.

Analysed by imports of Consumer goods, in 2012, value of Motor cars & motorcycles (MOP3.31 billion) grew by 33.9% year-on-year; Other durable consumer goods (MOP15.87 billion) expanded by 19.3%, with Watches (MOP5.15 billion) rising by 30.6%; Other semi-durable consumer goods (MOP9.58 billion) increased by 11.1%, with Footwear (MOP1.44 billion) rising by 17.1%. However, value of Tobacco (MOP508 million) fell by 39.7%.

Within the imports of Capital goods, in 2012, value of Mobile phones (MOP6.08 billion) and Computer hard disks (MOP819 million) increased by 41.5% and 40.8% respectively year-on-year.

In 2012, merchandise import from Mainland China (MOP23.20 billion), the EU (MOP16.65 billion) and Hong Kong (MOP8.21 billion) rose by 21.3%, 7.4% and 8.2% respectively year-on-year.
