IV. Reading Comprehension(每題 2 分,共 40 分)

Please read the passages below. Each passage will be followed by several questions. Choose the option that best answers each of these questions on the basis of what is stated or implied in the passage.

According to a criminal report, crimes can be divided into different types. White collar crime means that businessmen make millions of dollar annually through tax evasion. In organized crime, hundreds of millions of dollars may be made through illegal gambling, drug traffic, extortion, or prostitution. As to street crime, robbery, mugging, and looting belong to this type. There are crimes of passion such as murder, rape and assault. In every society, violations of regulations are designed to protect the public such as traffic and pedestrian rules. Corruption in the government is another type of crime. Besides, it is noted that police crime is what we cannot neglect.

Every time one of these crimes is committed, there is a great loss to the society not only in terms of money, property, or lives lost, but also in terms of society being made much weaker and less effective in its functioning. For example, if people believe that crimes can be committed and gotten away with,

(4)

they are more likely to try to commit them, or even perhaps commit crimes in order to stop others from committing them – such as buying a gun to shoot people who are trying to rob them rather than calling the police. When this happens, lawlessness spreads and people start to be afraid of and hate other people.

31. According to this passage, how many types of crimes are mentioned?

(A) Five types. (B) Six types. (C) Seven types. (D) Eight types.

32. When a victim is cornered and threatened to give up whatever money in his billfold to the criminal, what type of crime is it?

(A) White collar crime. (B) Street crime. (C) Organized crime. (D) Blue collar crime.

33.From this passage we can infer that to have an effectively functioning society, the government is supposed to ______________.

(A) do all it can to suppress and punish crimes.

(B) do all it can to ignore and punish crimes.

(C) do all it can to encourage and punish crimes.

(D) do all it can to tolerate and punish crimes.

34. What does “Tax evasion” refer to?

(A) Getting back tax money in lawful ways.

(B) Sharing tax money in necessary ways.

(C) Being levied lots of tax money.

(D) Paying less or no tax money in unlawful ways.

35. When an official take bribes, what type of crime does this belong to?

The following speech was delivered by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. He was a leader in the American civil rights movement in the 1950s and 1960s. During this time, his efforts to bring about racial justice won him the support of both blacks and whites. In 1964, Dr. King was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. His “nonviolent resistance” program reached a high point on August 28, 1963. More than 200,000 people gathered in front of the Lincoln Memorial to show their concern over civil rights.

I say to you today, my friends, even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream. I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: “We hold these truths to be self-evident:

that all men are created equal.”

I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia, the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood. I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a state sweltering with the heat of injustice, sweltering with the heat of oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice. I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character. I have a dream today!

(5)

I have a dream that one day, down in Alabama, with its vicious racists, with its governor having his lips dripping with the words of interposition and nullification, one day right there in Alabama, little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls as sisters and brothers. I have a dream that one day every valley shall be exalted, every hill and mountain shall be made low, the rough places will be made plain, and the crooked places will be made straight, and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together.

This is our hope. This is the faith that I go back to the South with. With this faith we will be able to hew out of the mountain of despair a stone of hope. With this faith we will be able to transform the jangling discords of our nation into a beautiful symphony of brotherhood. With this faith we will be able to work together, to pray together, to struggle together, to go to jail together, to stand up for freedom together, knowing that we will be free one day.
