(A) People often cry when they feel sad, angry, hurt, panicky, or helpless. Some people even cry when

they feel relieved or joyful. Did you know that the tears you cry when you have strong feelings have a purpose ? They help keep you healthy! When you feel upset, harmful chemicals build up in your body.

Scientists have learned that tears wash the chemicals out.

If you don't cry, the chemicals stay in your body. Sometimes they can even make you sick. People who hold back their tears are more likely to get colds and stomach pains than people who let themselves cry.

So, next time people tease you because you cry when you get hurt, tell them how healthy tears are.

Learning about that might help them change their minds. Maybe they'll even let themselves cry the next time they get hurt.

(B) Halloween is a well known festival that takes place near the end of autumn in Britain, the US, and some other countries. It is mainly celebrated by children, who dress up in scary costumes and walk around saying "trick or treat". In a village in south-west England, there is a similar festival that occurs around the same time as Halloween, but which has different origins. It is called "Punkie Night".

Punkie Night takes place on the last Thursday in October in the village of Hinton St. George. On the night, children carry lanterns made from hollowed-out pumpkins or turnips. The lanterns have faces carved into them, and the children carry them around the village, collecting money and singing a song called the Punkie Song.

The custom originated long ago. In a nearby town, there was an annual fair. One year, the men of Hinton St. George went together to the fair. Unfortunately, they drank too much and stayed there very late. Their angry wives dug up turnips, made lanterns, and came looking for their husbands in the dark. The drunken men saw the strange lights coming towards them. Thinking they were the spirits of dead children, the men ran away in fear.

Nowadays, it is children who carry the lanterns, or "punkies", which have candles inside them. Everyone gets together in the Village Hall, where there is a contest to choose the best lanterns. Prizes are given, then the children walk around the village in a parade. In the past few decades, the tradition has also spread to

(C) Beethoven was a musical genius, but he certainly did not have an easy life. His father started teaching him to play the piano when he was just four years old. At the age of 7 he had already become a skilled musician. However, his father was not kind to him. He often hit the young boy and locked him in the basement to make him practice. After getting home drunk in the middle of the night he would

sometimes wake Beethoven up and make him practice until morning. His mother died when he was just seventeen. Because his father was a drunk, he had to take care of the whole family by himself. Fortunately, Beethoven kept on writing music. When Beethoven was thirty years old, he started to go deaf. This was a great worry because he knew that he would have to give up playing the piano and find another way to make money. Although he never became rich, he achieved enormous success as a composer and he became very famous throughout Europe. But life kept on getting harder. In 1815 his brother, Kaspar, died. Beethoven took care of Kaspar's son, Karl, who was 9. Because Beethoven was deaf he could only talk with Karl by writing things down. Karl gave him a lot of stress. In addition, Beethoven had a drinking problem just like his father and this often made him ill. In 1827 he caught pneumonia and died. Twenty thousand people went to his funeral, including Schubert and other famous musicians.
