Water pollution can come from many different sources. One of the main reasons why rivers and lakes get dirty is called storm water pollution. Storm water is the water that runs down the street when it's raining. It enters drains at the side of the road. Water that flows down the street when it's not raining, for example when someone washes their car, is called urban runoff.

From the drains, storm water and urban runoff flow into the nearest stream, river, lake or ocean. That means any pollutants they contain end up in natural water resources. Soap, trash, pet waste, pesticides, dirt and oil are just some of the pollutants that make our water unhealthy. Chemicals especially can cause great harm to the plants and animals living in the water.

So, don't imagine that the sources of water pollution are always factories and farms. The biggest cause is ourselves. We shouldn't randomly throw stuff like paint, cooking oils, unwanted medicines, and other chemicals down the drain or toilet. And it
