Title: From spherical harmonics to the relative Langlands program

Abstract: I will begin with a brief recollection of the theory of spherical harmonics and explain how this example can be viewed within the framework of an extension of the Langlands program to the setting of spherical varieties, which is largely due to Yiannis Sakellaridis and Akshay Venkatesh.
