今年之開幕式邀請三位知名人物,他們姓名 與講題分別是:
第 一 位 是 Murali S. Nair 來自 National Science Foundation , 講 題 為 『 The
NSF/SBIR Innovation Model』他講授摘要 為: General information about the Small Business Innovation Research/Small Business Technology Transfer Programs at the National Science Foundation was provided. The presentation then described the NSF/SBIR Innovation Model and provide key program statistics. The review criteria and the review process then be explained. Insight into upcoming topics areas and the development of various future solicitations, with special focus on the "Electronics" solicitation was provided. The funding of small businesses pursuing electro-optics, photonics, MEMS, RF, Instrumentation and sensor technologies is described.
Finally, commercialization strategies used by the NSF/SBIR program to help portfolio companies was presented.
第二位是 Gert. J. Eileberger 來自 Alcatel SEL AG, Research & Innovation Center,講 題 為 『 Flexible optical transport networks-layer 2 technologies』他演講摘錄 為 : This talk deals with potential evolution scenarios from today's networks towards long term network architectures for multi-layer transport with a novel Layer 2 transport service based on optical and opto-electronic burst/packet techniques providing the flexibility, scalability, reliability and Quality of Service to support all future higher layer services optimizing both CAPEX and OPEX. An integrated control plane on the basis of GMPLS protocols will support the mostly automatic network operation by a vertical integration of Layer 1-2-3 technologies and a horizontal integration of domains providing end-to-end control and QoS. This long term evolutionary process needs to cover as well the necessary steps in the evolution of current standards.

『Prospects of Silicon Photonics for future VLSI interconnects』,他講授摘要為: The silicon chip has been the mainstay of the electronics industry for the last 40 years and has revolutionized the way the world operates. Today a silicon chip the size of a fingernail contains nearly one billion transistors and has the computing power that only a decade ago would take up an entire room of servers. Silicon photonics that mainly based upon silicon on insulator (SOI) has recently attracted a great deal of attention since it offers an opportunity for low cost opto-electronic solutions for applications ranging from telecommunications down to chip-to-chip interconnects. Recent advances and research breakthroughs in silicon photonic device performance over last few years have shown that silicon can be considered as a material onto which one can build future optical devices. While significant efforts are needed to improve device performance and to "commercialize" these technologies, progress is moving at a rapid rate. If successful, silicon photonics may similarly come to dominate the optical communications as it has the electronics industry. In this session, Dr.
Paniccia provided an overview of silicon photonics research at Intel and discussed the key building blocks needed for
"siliconizing" photonics. The talk also discussed if and how the combination of advanced CMOS electronics with photonics could be used for future optical interconnects and discuss what key challenges are needed to be addressed in order to make this transition happen. In addition the presentation discussed some of the practical issues and challenges with processing silicon photonic devices in a high volume CMOS manufacturing environment.

『 Reconfigurable optical add/drop
multiplexer with 8.0 dB net gain using double pass amplified scheme,』摘要如 下 :We proposed N-channel power compensated and reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexer (ROADM) based on the utilization of fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs). Bothtunable and fixed fiber Bragg gratings are used in this ROADM. By using the dual-pass amplification scheme, an 8.0 dBoptical net gain is achieved with gain variation under ±0.5 dB for each add/drop/pass-through channel. System demonstration bit error rate performance with only 1.2 dB of power penalty in a10 Gb/sx 4 Ch, 100-km lightwave transmission is observed. 其二是” 『An intensity modulation based high-speed and high-resolution long-period fiber grating sensor interrogating system』摘要 如下: Tunable fiber Bragg grating based active optical add/drop multiplexer with 15.2 dB gain is obtained.

A fast responding interrogation system
based on intensity modulation using fiber Bragg gratings (FBG) has been developed to interrogate long period fiber grating (LPFG) sensor. Temperature and dynamic strain monitoring usingthis system have been successfully demonstrated. The performance of longperiod fiber grating (LPFG) sensors written in single cladding (SC)and double cladding (DC) fibers have been compared. This systemis capable of resolving strain to 0.2µ and 0.4µ at a loading frequency of 20 Hz, and temperature resolution to 0.02°C and 0.19°C, by using LPFG in the single cladding(SC-LPFG) and double cladding (DC-LPFG) respectively.

Optics East 2006 約吸引 1700 人與會包括來 自學術、產業與政府機關,它最大之特點是 整合多個光電會議,讓人看到技術彼此整合 之火花。誠如Daylight Solutions 公司行銷 部主任Kevin Liddane 說:"We met many potential customers and suppliers at Optics East, as we do at other SPIE conferences," We found strong interest in our new compact, tunable, mid-infrared lasers." 而 SPIE 事務部主任 Janice Walker 說: "We heard many positive comments on the quality of the presentations at Optics East and the connections people formed here," 誠如參觀貴賓 Laser Focus World 之 主編Steve Anderson 博士說 "It's great to come to these meetings. At Optics East I saw impressive and important products that I had never seen before, particularly in the field of sensors." 他同時鼓勵從事感 測的朋友來參加Optics East。
此會議有一特色就是將 R&D 與 business
展示結合在一起,使得關於通訊及環境感測 應用之新資訊新產品得以結合在一起!而對 於感測方面比例將越來越強調。在terahertz imaging, near infrared 及 photon counting technology programs,Optics East 可能是 全球最好之會議之一,此外nanotechnology 應用於measurement science 也是本會議之 強項。今年出席會議之人士除了主辦國之
