An Example of Queries Discussed in a Treatment Story
“A Missing Man Found”
Segment One
ONCE on a time twelve men of Gorham went fishing in the stream that supplied the town pond and sometimes they fished from the shore, and sometimes they waded out into the stream to get better positions from which to cast their lines.
(Initiating Query)
What does the author tell us here?
(Follow-up Query)
What does the author mean by “getting better positions to cast their lines?
Segment Two
As they were coming back one of them said, "We've ventured much this day wading.
I pray God that none of us drowned.”
(Initiating Query)
What is the author trying to say here?
(Follow-up Query) Why do you think so?
Segment Three
"Let's see about that," said a second man. "Twelve of us came out this morning.
7I'll count and see if twelve are going back."
So he counted, "One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, and eleven." But he forgot to count himself. "I can make no more than eleven," said he.
"Surely, one of us is drowned."
(Initiating Query)
What picture does the author create for us?
(Follow-up Query)
What makes you think so?
Segment Four
Then the other men counted, but each forgot to count himself and could find only eleven. "Alas!" said one to another, "there's no doubt about it. One of us is drowned."
They went back to the stream where they had been fishing and looked up and down for him that was drowned and lamented greatly.
(Initiating Query)
What does the author mean when he says “looked up and down for him that was drowned and lamented greatly?”
(Follow-up Query) How did you know that?
Segment Five
By and by a man of Nottingham came riding past." What are you looking for there?"
he asked, "and why are you so sad?"
(Narrative Query)
So, what is the stranger up to here?
(Follow-up Query)
What makes you think so?
Segment Six
"Oh," said they, "this day we came to fish in this stream, and there were twelve of us.
But one is drowned, for now there are but eleven of us."
(Initiating Query)
What message does the author give us in this paragraph?
(Follow-up Query)
Where can you find the information?
Segment Seven
"Count me how many of you there are," said the stranger.
One of the men of Gorham counted, and as he didn't count himself he made eleven.
(Narrative Query)
What do things look for the stranger and the twelve men?
(Follow-up Query)
How did you make your judgment?
Segment Eight
"Well," said the stranger, "what will you give me if I find the twelfth man?"
"Sir," said they, "we'll give you all the money we carry on us."
"Give me the money," said the Nottingham man.
(Initiating Query)
What is the author trying to tell us about the stranger?
(Follow-up Query)
So why did he ask for money before he helped them find out the missing man?
Segment Nine
When the money was safe in his pocket he said, "Now pass in front of me;" and he began with the first man and hit him a crack on the shoulders with his whip.
(Initiating Query)
How does this paragraph relate to the previous parts?
(Follow-up Query)
Where did you find the clues?
Segment Ten
"There is one," said he.
The next one he cracked with his whip likewise. "There are two," said he; and so he served them all down to the last, whom he gave an extra hard blow and said, "Here is your twelfth man."
"God bless your heart!" said all the company; "you've found our neighbor."
(Initiating Query)
How does the author settle the ending of the story?
(Follow-up Query)
So the author thinks they are funny?
Well, does the author say that directly?

“Bridge Thinking”
1 THERE were two men of Gorham. One of them was going to market from 2Nottingham to buy sheep, and the other came from the market. They met on 3Nottingham Bridge.#1"Where are you going?" said the one who came from 4Nottingham.
5 "That's none of your business," replied the other, "but I don't mind telling you 6that I am going to Nottingham to buy sheep."
7 "Buy sheep!" said the other, "and which way will you bring them home?"
8 "Well," responded the other, "I will bring them over this bridge."#2 9 "Not at all," said he that came from Nottingham. "I won't let you drive your 10sheep across this bridge."
11 "You will!" yelled the other.
12 "I won't!" declared the other.#3
13 Each man carried a stout cane, and as they talked they swung their canes in the 14air and thumped with them on the ground.
15 "If you act like that," said John, "you'll make my sheep jump over the side of the 16bridge into the water and they'll drown."4#
17 "You can take them home some other way."
18 "No, I shall not!" said John, "I shall bring them across this bridge."
19 "You'll get a rap on your head with my cane if you do," said Thomas.#5
20 While they were quarrelling another man of Gorham came from the market. The 21man was leading a horse with a bag of meal on its back. He stopped on the bridge 22and listened to learn what the trouble was between his two neighbors.#6"How is 23this?" said he - "you're ready to come to blow over some sheep; but I see not a 24single sheep for you to fight about."
25 "No," explained the other two, "they're not bought yet."#7
26 "Ah, where is your common sense?" said the newcomer. "Here, lift this bag of 27meal from the horse to my shoulders and I'll show you what I think of you."#8 28 They did as he suggested, and then he went to the side of the bridge, untied the 29mouth of the bag and shook all his meal out into the river. "Now, neighbors," said 30he, "how much meal is there in my bag?"
31 "Why, surely," replied they, "there is none at all."#9
32 "Quite right!" said he, "and just as much wit is there in your two heads to stir up 33strife about a thing you have not."
34 So the three men went their ways, and which was the wisest of these three 35persons, do you think? #10

“The Salt Fish and the Eel”
1 THE men of Gorham were very fond of salt fish, and they bought a great many 2of them. There was, indeed, no meat food they had on their tables oftener. Of 3course the cost was considerable, and one time, about the beginning of winter, the 4men of Gorham got together to consider how to save this expense.#1
5 "We have a nice large pond right in the middle of our town," said one man; "why
6not raise our own fish?"
7 "Yes, it's a good pond," said another, "but where would we get the fish to stock it 8with?"#2
9 "That's easily done," responded the first man." You well know how fish multiply.
#3
10Haven't we many fish not yet eaten in our homes? Put those in the pond and let 11them breed, and next year we'll have a plenty. We won't need to go to market for 12our salt fish, but will catch them as we want them from our pond."#4
13 "Good! Good!" cried the men of Gorham clapping their hands and stamping their 14feet. "Let every man who has salt fish left cast them into the pond!"#5
15 "I have many white herrings," said one.
16 "I have many sprats," said another.
17 "I have many red herrings," said another.
18 So they all told what salt fish they had and said, "Yes, yes, throw them into the 19pond and we shall fare like lords next year!"#6
20 Without further delay the salt fish were put into the pond, and when spring came 21the men of Gorham thought the fish must have multiplied and that it was time to 22take some of them out.#7 So they dragged the pond with a net and drew it to the 23shore expecting to find it full of fish, but it was empty. Again and again they 24dragged it through the pond, yet do what they would they could not catch any fish.
