Although most people see monkeys only in zoos, in some Asian countries such as India and Indonesia, monkeys also live in cities. They beg for food and often steal it from vendors. Sometimes they bite people who try to stop them.
How did monkeys come to make their homes in cities? The reason goes back hundreds of years. At that time, monkeys lived in the forests, but they often visited temples, where people welcomed them and fed them food. Some monkeys began to live in and around the temples. Later, when cities grew around the temples, the animals continued to stay there. Today these groups of wild monkeys have become a big problem for city governments.
