(15 − 0)× 18%] × 100 + 1 − 0 = 19

The scoring of these five companies can be reordered start from the highest to the lowest score.

Pegatron (20) > Quanta (19) = TSMC (19) > Compal (18) > Hon Hai (14.8)

The result has shown that Pegtron performs better in putting Corporate Social Responsibility into Practice of all. In addition, all companies except Hon Hai received 100% scores on category 5. In category other matters, Hon Hai received no positive points but two negative points. Quanta and TSMC are second place which both earn one point in other matters while Compal earns both one positive and negative points.

CSR has become one important thing to all enterprises. The significance of CSR will only be greater year after year. Under environmental CSR, all the human beings have seen the influence of global warming. We can no longer lie ourselves that pollution on water, air, lands, or animals won’t do any damage at all. When discussing economic CSR, the gap between the rich and the poor is going much severe in these years, and the unemployment rate is climbing higher and higher. Under social CSR, many countries in the world are suffering poverty problems. Poverty problems do not just appear in Taiwan, but also in many countries. Population problem is another critical issues. Increased of older people create more problems. In this contemporary decade, if a company does not do CSR, its reputation, sales, relationship with customers, future perspectives, and etcetera will all be ruined.

In this research, five Taiwanese technology companies are discussed which are Hon Hai, Pegatron, Quanta, Compal, and TSMC. Each company has done some CSR activities that they think is important. However, Compal is the only company who does internal CSR for its internal stakeholders, but also does many CSR contributions to external stakeholders. Compal acquired the most environmental certification. Moreover, Compal had touched Taiwan’s social problem very in depth from education to volunteer services, and to disadvantaged people. Compal had answered Taiwan’s poverty problem. On the other hand, Compal has the most completed CSR report of all.

Another honorable mention is TSMC, TSMC had directly answered Taiwan’s water problem. TSMC shows strong and proactive attitude. TSMC keeps water resources on the track and measure the consumption yearly. The company advocates the water conserving ideas to its supply chain, and developed advanced wastewater recycling system. According to the data shown in the TSMC CSR report, TSMC’s water recycling rate increases every year. In 2014, 56.22 million m3 of water is saved compares with 34.66 million m3 saved in 2010.

On the other side, under economic CSR, Compal pooled together a farm to sponsor Yilan Nanao’s natural farms. The contribution helps in Taiwan’s unemployment problem. Compal’s contribution in establishing new farms create more jobs for farmers and merchants. The economy has gain benefits. In addition, this help the low income citizens to meliorate their lives. This shortens the gap between the rich and the poor.

Nonetheless, after calculating scores of their CSR actions by using TWSE Evaluation System, the study has acquired another result. Pegatron is the one who does better on

“putting” CSR into practice. This does not prove one does more or better CSR actions than another. The result retrieved from TWSE Evaluation System gives a basic understanding on which company knows how to implement CSR perfectly. Hon Hai performs the worst of all due to two negative points under “Other Matters.” Mr. Liao Wan-Cheng was prosecuted for violating Security Exchange Act.

The research of these two methods convey that CSR activities are treated differently in each company. Good at “putting” CSR into practice does not demonstrate it has better

performance in CSR actions. From the research, we also see technology companies focus heavier on environmental CSR actions. The reason is because companies manufacture products; in addition, products’ materials are retrieved from environment, and the waste goes to environment.

Therefore, Taiwan’s environmental problems, economic problems, and social problems cannot be solved just by one company. Our environments, future generations, and economy need everyone’s care. Taiwanese technology companies are not the only ones in charge, all companies, government, NGOs, and every citizens are responsible for the change or damages on environment, economy, and society. If Taiwan does not obtain supports from everyone, the future is devastating.
