In regard of this study, the major limitations are:
- The result of the study is conditioned to the quality of the data collected and to the transformation of them in an adequate way.
- Although the study made a public contracting analysis in Colombia, it just analyzes one procurement method: public tender, because this method is used to contract by all government entities in Colombia
- It is important to mention that any model or algorithm can or should be used exclusively.
There is not a “best” model or algorithm for a given problem, since the own nature of the data will affect the selection of the model, along with, in the case of this study, the availability of the selected algorithm in an open source data mining tool.
5.4 Future Studies
Below are some considerations to take into account for futures studies:
1. The analysis of this study were made from a descriptive data mining model to determine the patterns and associations of the historical data. Future studies should
56
apply also a predictive data mining model to provide a forecast regarding to e-procurement or public contracting in Colombia.
2. The analysis could be used as well to get some strategies and plans for the public spending in Colombia
3. The approach outlined in this study could be replicated in other areas with a large data base of historical records available.
