5.1 Prospects and Future Research
The Sunflower Student Movement not only showed the discontent of the Taiwanese youth with their current government but also had a deep impact on the socio-political structures in Taiwan. Being criticized as a generation, not interested in politics and too weak to speak up and lacking political convictions, the so-called “strawberry generation”
proved them wrong.
One year passed after the Sunflower Student Movement and the people behind the “new media” are still working on better institutions to improve Taiwan’s current democratic system. It should be interesting for further research to see in how far social media is able to improve a government’s structure after a profound social movement.
One can only see in the long run if social media is also capable of carrying on the emotions evoked by the movement and thus makes the formation of new social movements redundant. In the recent years the occurrence of social movements increased. People start to touch upon controversial and political issues and show the government their discontent. Of course this can have a positive effect on the government. The government can change its policy and institutions and give in to the people’s demands. However, more research should be conducted on the negative aspect as well. Social media makes it easier for people to assemble and create social movements. But protestors are normally no politicians and thus may be unable to understand how governments and institutions work. This can lead to demonstrations that have no real goal or aim and just came to be out of grievances against the system itself. Protestors may try to provoke the government to change because of egotistic and emotionally charged reasons and thus may harm the democratic system. More research should be conducted on how internet-mediated movements may not only be a benefit to the improvement of democratic systems. Furthermore, social media allows movements to grow more rapidly, however, this can also prevent demonstrations from becoming cohesive enough to prolong for a period of time. It is important for protestors to know what they are aiming for and also offer solutions to the government. Thus, social media can be a double-edged sword when used as a tool for the forming of social movements. As for the Sunflower Student Movement, it should be interesting to observe the future of the protest leaders. If these young citizens really want to change the democratic structures of Taiwan for the better, they need to change the system from

within. Protesting against government policies may not be as effective as to actually get involved into politics and become a politician.
