Chapter 5: Discussion

5.5 Summary and conclusions

As hypothesized, traditionality-modernity was related to help-seeking attitudes in our sample of Taiwanese university students, with most but not all of the

relationships corresponding to our hypotheses. Our findings have implications for counseling practice, including possible changes in the future and the importance of cooperation between counselors and indigenous healers. Future research can expand on our findings by measuring actual help-seeking behaviors, investigating other mediating variables, investigating attitudes towards different theoretical orientations in counseling, and extending these findings to other countries. Finally, future research can benefit from more nationally-representative samples, better measures of modernity and indigenous healing attitudes, and more measures of indigenous healing-related psychological characteristics.
