APPENDIX B INFORMED CONSENT FORM Self-positioning of Non-native English-speaking

International English Teachers in Taiwan Informed Consent Form for Research Participation Dear ________________________,

I am here to invite you to participate in the research project for my master’s thesis, Discursive Positioning of Non-native English-speaking (NNES) International English Teachers in Taiwan. My name Vivianne Yu-Lien Lo, and I am a graduate student of Department of English in National Chengchi University. This study aims to probe into the experiences of “foreign” English teachers in Taiwan who do not speak English natively. In so doing, I hope to draw more attention and arouse new discussions about international language teachers in Taiwan.

I need your cooperation to help me learn more about the experiences of non-native English-speaking international teachers. If you accept, firstly I would like you to share your story with me by narrating your working experiences of teaching English in Taiwan. Next, you will be asked to take part in two to three face-to-face interviews with me, each of which will last around one to two hours. The interviews will all be audio-recorded and fully transcribed later on. All the information I collect from you will be protected and kept private. I will not be sharing anything of it with anyone outside the research team. All files related to this study will be safely stored in the researcher’s computer and a cloud drive only. The audio recordings will be deleted altogether three years after the research is completed and published. If necessary, I may extend the time of preserving those files, and that will be no longer than 10 years. Your name will be replaced with a pseudonym. The institutes you have worked at and the schools you have been attended will not be revealed; they will be given a “nickname” as well. Descriptions concerning their locations and details will be deliberately made vague. To avoid misunderstanding, you will

receive a summary of the results, including a description of your background and my interpretation of the findings. You can ask to modify or remove any content if you disagree with me, or when I do not understand you correctly. Eventually, I will publish this research in academic conferences or journals so that other people who are interested in this topic can benefit from the study.

Your participation in this research is entirely voluntary. It is your choice

whether to participate or not. The choice that you make will have no bearing on your schoolwork, job, or on any study- or work-related evaluations and reports. You may change your mind later and stop participating even if you have agreed earlier.

Should any interview questions make you feel uncomfortable, you may report it me, refuse to answer, ask me to turn off the recorder, or have it removed from the transcript. Your withdrawal will not affect any of your rights in this research.

In appreciation of your devotion, you will receive a gift from me. Also, for your time and effort, I will cover all the expenses on the foods and drinks we have during the interviews. Your contribution is likely to help me develop revolutionary insights in the understanding of non-native English-speaking teacher identity.
