Chapter 5 Conclusions

5.2 Future Research and Limitations

In conclusion, there are some limitations in our study, which should be emphasized. First and foremost is the sample. The size and the geographic limitations of the sample are issues that we need to be addressed in future research, which should be done using larger sample

58

size to reduce bias. In this study, we took a survey from companies, which are mainly located in Jakarta, a capital city of Indonesia and some of them located in other cities inside Java Island. Even though most of the companies has their manufacturing facilities in rural area however they will open their head office in Jakarta or Surabaya, second largest city in Indonesia. Thus, we took assumption that it would be fine to spread questionnaire from big cities only. Apparently, it was not an appropriate way to establish the questionnaire since this study represents coal industry supply chain in Indonesia so we should also spread it to rural area. Therefore, these questionnaire results haven’t showed a concrete outcome. Future research will be needed to explicitly investigate larger sample size of Indonesian companies to reduce inaccuracy of the results.

Second limitation of this study is due to a little research focusing on SSCM in Indonesia, so there are still lots of studies and investigation in Indonesia that can be explored. Even though, there was a research in Malaysia about SSCM however they were only focusing on the implementation and performance. Additionally, there was a case study in Indonesia focusing on SSCM as well yet they were only concerning on cocoa industry. Therefore, our findings can be used as research background for further study on SSCM for any kinds of industry in Indonesia.

Third, our dimensions and criteria might not represent the entire SSCM so there may be factors, which we have not been included into our research. Hence, future research could utilize the concepts and results to develop a detailed conceptualization of SSCM especially in the context of Indonesia. Further studies can replicate this study by looking other forms of factors of adoption or implementation or even performance.

Finally, there was a reliability issues on the questionnaires’ data. According to the K alpha and ICC value, it showed that they are not reliable enough which means each company has possessed conflicting point of views with other company. Therefore, future efforts should attempt to be more precise in measuring the data, perhaps by classify the company business for example manufacturing and service company should not be in the same category so their perception could be more identical.

This work takes a first step toward understanding on SSCM in Indonesia. While the present research also need to raise a number of issues that need to be addressed further, it

59

makes it clear that at least within our sample supply chain managers do not think only within triple bottom line but would also benefit from a more complete understanding of the complex relationship we find within sustainable supply chain.
