5. Conclusions and Discussion

5.3 Limitation and Suggestion

This thesis has offered a detailed picture about the coverage of the Foxconn suicide incident in general and news representation of worker and employer during the incident in particular. However, the major limit of this research is that it only

examined the news content without taking the process of news production and social realities into consideration. The thesis failed to discuss the fundamental difference of workers and employers as an attractive news subject in the media system. The inclusion of both key factors is expected to provide an in-depth explanation to the findings in this thesis.

The present study is focused on Taiwanese newspapers only. Considering the incident occurred in China and also evoked great discussion about the local labor system, it would be of both cultural and academic interest to compare how media on both sides of the Taiwan Strait covered the incident.

In addition, the thesis has examined only newspaper coverage. As television is another major news source in Taiwan, it will be of great significance to include TV news for a comparative analysis of media with different political orientations.

Further, the present study focuses on examining labor coverage in the context of the suicide event, yet labor issue is only one of the many aspects to look at in this incident, such as how Foxconn handled the crisis, how media dealt with the suicide news and so on. Future research may want to extend the analysis from perspectives of suicide news, public relations, to other communication related issues.

As aforementioned, labor news has been of little interest in the communication academics in Taiwan. This thesis carried on the effort by previous research in hope of encouraging more studies to contribute themselves to the field. The Foxconn incident is only one of the many cases for analysis, while future research can draw upon labor

coverage in the context of other news events. Labor issue is such an important subject for the public that it should receive more coverage and attention.
