Limitations of the study and suggestions for future research

Although this study found a positive effect of playing a collocation game via smart phones, and shed light on the feasibility of learning via quick plays of smart phone games at anytime and anywhere, this study has the limitations as follows.

First, due to limitations of resources, the number of participants in this study was small. If more students are recruited, the results could be more reliable. Future research could be conducted with larger sample size to gain higher reliability. Second limitation relates to the short duration of experiment. Longer duration may yield more

74

impressive learning gains.

Suggestions for future research are as follows. First, this study found that traditional group and gaming group achieved similar improvements. The results are far from conclusive. It is possible that learning gains achieved in the process of gaming could retain longer than those obtained from memorization. Future research can administer delayed post test to further investigate whether gaming helps longer retention. What’s more, future research can consider using both precognitive tests and productive tests to better capture learning gains occurring at both recognition and production level. The game used in this study was designed by the researcher and her colleagues. Third, the study found many directions for improvement, and future research can integrate these suggestions in their game design. Finally, this study showed that a quick play on smart phone learning games makes real contribution to learning and motivates students to do informal learning at anytime and anywhere. It is, however, observed that using smart phones are sometimes banned by schools. To better understand the opportunities and challenges of embodying learning via playing smart phone games, future research could further investigate perception of teachers and parents.
