Noted Critic Leo Lee to Lecture
on Eileen Chang
One of the foremost scholars of modern Chinese cultural and literary studies will discuss the cinematic involvements of the legendary Chinese writer Eileen Chang (Zhang Ailing) at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology on Friday, 24 April.
"Eileen Chang and Cinema", by Prof Leo Ou-fan Lee, will explore both the literary aspects of her screenplays and the cinematic aspects of her fiction, with particular attention to the screwball comedies, including her most famous story, "Love in the Fallen City".
Prof Lee is Professor of Chinese Literature at Harvard University and an adjunct professor in the Division of Humanities at HKUST, where he is teaching this year. He is well known for promoting cultural interflow between Chinese and Western scholars, introducing new theoretical models and remapping modern Chinese literary history. In his lecture, Prof Lee will also reflect on the so-called "legend" of Eileen Chang, who has inspired critical as well as public adulation. The author of books on Lu Xun and the romantic generation of modern Chinese writers, he is currently completing a study of the literature of Shanghai.
"Eileen Chang and Cinema" is a Distinguished Lecture sponsored by HKUST's School of Humanities & Social Science.
