There are some differences between Christmas in the UK and in the USA. Children in England call Santa Claus Father Christmas. Most Americans decorate their houses entirely in lights and other festival ornaments. The extravagant Christmas decorations you may have seen in American movies are real, and some people even turn their houses into full-on light shows. Driving through American streets at Christmas is sometimes like a tour of Disney World. However, usually 2-3 houses out of both street sides have some lights in the UK. The lights seem to be tossed around a tree. Moreover, the British say “Happy Christmas” to each other while Americans say “ Merry Christmas.” If you are with an American family that day, don’t expect to eat turkey for sure. Americans have had that for Thanksgiving. They might have turkeys, but it’s also possible for them to have ham, roast beef or goose instead on Christmas Day.

Traditional Christmas desserts such as Christmas cake, Christmas pudding and pies are not popular in the USA. Americans usually have pumpkin pie, fruit cake, apple pie, coconut cake or sweet potato pie after the big meal.

There is one special thing about the Christmas in the UK, the Christmas cracker. It is a paper tube with a present inside it. The tube is wrapped in colorful and festive paper. As two people pull the cracker, a loud noise “Pop” is made, the cracker breaks and then the prize falls out. The person holding the larger end can keep the only prize inside. A Christmas cracker traditionally contains a paper crown, a small gift and a joke written on a piece of paper.

Aside from the differences, there are some things that are the same. Stores play Christmas music throughout the season. As for Christmas trees, people like buying real trees or even going to cut their own trees and take them home. On Christmas Day, everything shuts down. No public transit and all the stores are closed. So, if you want to do some shopping during your trip, you will probably find yourself disappointed on Christmas Day!

Do you find that you are always counting your pennies, but still seem to be poor? It's high time that you tried out some more interesting ways to save your money.

If you've had a piggy bank since you were little, but hardly ever insert any coins into it, how about adding a new twist to your method? From now on, make it a rule that every time you catch yourself swearing or saying something bad about others, you have to put $10 into it. Not only can you save up some dollars but you can also get rid of your habit of using bad language. Don't worry if you don't have a piggy bank; an old jar will do! Another idea is to change your approach to spending. Rather than making a budget for how much you're going to spend this week, why not make a budget for how much you're going to save? In this way, your mind will shift from spending to saving. If you usually spend $65 on your lunch, look for something that costs only $50, and the $15 goes into your piggy bank. What would pizza or spaghetti be like if the tomato sauce were missing? Well, this is how the two dishes that brought fame to Italy were enjoyed before the 16th century. It wasn't until Columbus set foot on New World soil that the tomato made its way to Europe. Following its introduction, it took a few hundred years before it made its entry into

European cuisine.

It's hard to say where and when pizza first came into existence. The ancient Greeks topped their breads with a dash of oil, fresh herbs, and cheese. After traders brought the tomato to Italy, it still wasn't added to bread until much later. One legend has it that the invention of modern pizza dates back to.1899 in Naples. When Queen Margherita visited the city, a local bakery served her bread covered with cheese, tomato sauce, and basil.

The colors of the three ingredients, white, red, and green, resembled the Italian flag. From that day, "margherita" pizza became the standard, and Naples is now known as the hometown of modern pizza.

It's a similar story for pasta. Pasta refers to noodles made from wheat flour that come in all shapes and sizes, from small curls known as macaroni to flat sheets used in lasagna . At first, pasta was enjoyed without any sauce. The first mention of tomato sauce being used in the preparation of pasta was in a 1790 cookbook called L'Apicio Moderno.

The tomato didn't transform Italian cuisine as much as many people may think. Today, many Italians still retain their traditional way of eating bread and pasta: by

sprinkling some herbs and oil on them. It is actually non-Italians who tend to go heavy on the tomato sauce.

62. Which of the following is TRUE?

(A) The tomato is not as important to traditional Italian cuisine as many people think. (B) Despite what many think, Italians actually don't really like eating tomatoes.

(C) After it was introduced, the tomato totally transformed Italian cooking methods. (D) Greek and New World cuisine had a major effect on the way Italians enjoy their food.

63. According to the article, when was the tomato sauce first used in Italy's two most famous dishes?

(A) Before the 16th century. (B) Between 1600 and 1750. (C) Between 1750 and 1900. (D) In recent times.

64. What or who was the first modern-style pizza named after?

(A) The bakery where it was made. (B) The city where it was invented. (C) The queen who first tried it. (D) The colors of the Italian flag. 65. How do many Italians eat their bread and pasta today?

(A) With lots of tomato sauce.

(B) With lots of cheese sprinkled on it. (C) In the more traditional, simpler manner. (D) In the modern, Naples style.

(D)

People say you can choose your friends, but not your family. Maybe it is true, but it’s clear that having good friends come with many health benefits. New research shows that your friends may be more important than family relationships in terms of your health and happiness.

(5)

【承第三次月考 國三英文】 P.5 Researchers from Michigan State University carried out two studies, which examined how friendships and family affect our physical and mental health. They first looked at data from nearly 280,000 people from almost 100 countries worldwide. After comparing people’s friendships and family relationships with their physical and mental health, the team discovered that friendship was linked to higher scores of health and happiness than family relationships. Besides, as the interviewees aged, the importance of friendships increased. The second study examined 7,500 older adults. It suggested that the quality of friendships had a much bigger influence on health than family relationships. People who reported stressful or strained friendships were much more likely to suffer from poor health, compared to those who had positive friendships. In contrast with the great influence of friendships on health, the impact from family relationships was relatively negligible.

There are several potential reasons why friendships are important for well-being: For one, it’s easier to drop a bad friendship than it is to cut ties with a family member. Even better, friends can also provide social supports when things get tough with relatives, such as going through a divorce or when caring for an aged parent.

66. What is the article mainly about? (A) Secrets to good relationships. (B) Definition of trustworthy friends.

(C) Influence of friendships on health. (D) Importance of close family relationships.

67. Which of the following is closest in meaning to the word "negligible" in the 2nd paragraph?

(A) negative (B) small (C) important (D) different

68. According to the article, which of the following statements is TRUE? (A) As we grow up, the importance of friendship becomes greater. (B) People fail to receive social supports from their family members. (C) Only friends who survive the test of time can affect people's health. (D) People can't choose their family, so it will not influence their health.

69. In which journal were the two studies most likely to be reported? (A) The Journal of Human Resources.

(B) The Journal of Medicine. (C) The Journal of Finance.

(D) The Journal of Interpersonal Relationship.
