PRESS RELEASE 1 November 2004

KELLOGG-HKUST EMBA Program

Ranks No. 6 in the World

1 November 2004...The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology’s School of Business and Management (HKUST Business School) today announced that its joint Executive MBA program with the Kellogg School of Management of Northwestern University, US, has risen to No. 6 on the Financial Times worldwide EMBA rankings - up from its ninth-place ranking in the last survey in 2003.

Described by the Financial Times as “one of Asia’s youngest but most respected business schools”, the HKUST Business School launched the Kellogg-HKUST EMBA Program on the HKUST campus in 1998 to provide the best executive education that the US and Asia could offer. The program consists of 28 courses offered during two weekends each month for 16 months. Half of the courses are taught by Kellogg faculty members, and the other half by HKUST faculty members.

HKUST is the only school in the Asia Pacific listed among the top ten. Its partner school, Kellogg, ranks No.2 in the world. The other schools at the top are Pennsylvania: Wharton (No. 1), University of Chicago: GSB (No. 3), New York University: Stern (No. 4) and Duke University: Fuqua (No. 5).

HKUST President Paul Chu congratulated the Business School on achieving world status with its unique partnership program. “The latest Financial Times EMBA program ranking is yet another worldwide recognition of HKUST's remarkable achievement in offering a quality program that represents one of the most successful dimensions of HKUST's

internationalization. Not only do we have a very distinguished and internationalized faculty, but the University also attracts students from around the world and partners with renowned institutions like Kellogg. The EMBA program propels those top executives to even higher planes in their careers and contributes to the economic development of the region.”

Dean K.C. Chan of HKUST Business School said, “It is our on-going aspiration to offer business education of the highest quality to our students. I am very pleased to see that our partnership program with Kellogg is doing so well. The Financial Times recognition confirms that our on-going efforts in building the School and its programs are succeeding. Our goal is to add value to our students, program partner, faculty and the corporate sponsors in the continuous pursuit of excellence.”

Founding Program Director Steven DeKrey thanked partner school Kellogg for its support at all levels. “As an alumnus and former assistant dean at Kellogg, I have double pleasure to see the successful development of our program. The rankings reflect the views of our alumni and students about the School and the program. We are delighted to receive such high praise from them,” said Prof. DeKrey.

The Financial Times ranking evaluated the EMBA programs by considering the quality of their alumni, the quality of the school and program, and the research capabilities of faculty members. Alumni quality is determined by salary and career advancements of graduates after the completion of the program, their work experience and seniority, and their feedback on whether the program that they attended helped them to fulfill their aims.

School quality is measured by the diversity of its faculty, students and advisors, the global nature of the program and the proportion of faculty with PhD degrees. The research ranking is determined by the scholarly output of faculty members in top academic journals. In the case of a joint program such as the Kellogg-HKUST EMBA, the ranking takes into account the research output of the entire HKUST Business School faculty and includes that of faculty members from Kellogg who teach in the joint program.

The survey reflects on the overall strengths of the HKUST Business School and its

partnership program with Kellogg. Both emphasize recruiting and retaining excellent faculty members. It also reflects the international diversity of the Kellogg-HKUST EMBA program in particular in terms of the composition of its students and faculty, which are rated No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, in the world in this ranking. It also highlights the partnership program, which caters to senior and experienced executives whose work experience was ranked 4th in the world by the Financial Times.
