are in no way related. Take a rabbit’s foot, for example. Have you ever thought about the reason why a rabbit’s foot is __55______lucky in many Western countries? One saying is that rabbits, unlike most other animals, touch the ground with their back feet first when they are running. Westerners, thus, consider this fact unusual and even magical. However, this superstition is not ___56____ any scientific proof. Similarly, Americans usually say “Knock on wood” or actually do this for good luck, since they want to prevent tree spirits from

affecting their luck. It’s clear that these are just two situations __57____ people superstitiously associate one event with another.

Aside from superstitions for good luck, some more __58_____customs have grown out of fears that are related to superstitions. Superstition-based customs are what most members of a society usually do to deal with ___59____. In Taiwan, for instance, the word for the number “four” sounds like the word for “death.” Because of its association with death, the number four has long been considered an unlucky number by Taiwanese. The reason why people in the West often say “Bless you” when a person sneezes is also superstition-based. This phrase is used because some Westerners used to believe that devils might enter one’s body when a person sneezes.

Nowadays, because of changing ideas, some superstitious customs have been practiced in different ways. An artificial rabbit’s foot, for example, is often used instead of a __60__one to avoid the killing of rabbits. However, many people still find __61___ in following

superstition-based customs. Though people are unable to predict the future, they still hope for a chance to try to control it.

The Roman sun god, Apollo, was famous for his archery skills. One afternoon, Apollo came across Cupid playing with his bow and arrows. Apollo had recently defeated a giant snake and was feeling very powerful and confident. “What do you think you are doing, little boy?” Apollo asked Cupid. “You might hurt yourself! Why don’t you run along and leave the weapons to someone who knows how to use them?”

Apollo’s taunts upset Cupid, who stood up and took two different arrows from his quiver. The first was made of gold and had a sharp tip. The person struck by this arrow would immediately fall in love. The second, however, was not sharp and it had a tip of lead. The person struck by it would not be able to stand even the thought of love. “You may be able to hit any target you choose with your arrows, Apollo, but I shall strike you with mine!” Cupid said, raising his bow.

Cupid shot the golden arrow straight through Apollo’s heart, and the lead arrow struck the beautiful Daphne, daughter of the river god Peneus. From then on, Apollow was madly in love with Daphne.

Because of Cupid’s arrow, Daphne rejected love completely and refused all suitors. She was

only interested in running around in the woods and never thought of marriage.

Although Daphne wanted nothing to do with Apollo, he was still affected by Cupid’s arrow and chased after her. “Slow down!” he called. “I am not the enemy. I am in love with you!” However, like a rabbit fleeing a wolf, she always kept one step ahead of him. To her, love and marriage were like punishments. After a while, though, Daphne grew tired and could run no more. “Oh, Father, help me change my form!” she called out to Peneus as Apollo gained on her. All of a sudden, Daphne’s feet became rooted to the ground, and her body turned into the trunk of a laurel tree. Her arms became its branches and her hair the leaves. Apollo finally stood before her, touched her bark and kissed her leaves. “Since you can not be my wife, you shall always be my tree. I will wear you for my crown, and your leaves will be woven into wreaths for triumphant Romans.” To this day, the laurel wreath remains a symbol of the highest honor and victory.

When it comes to conversation, we believe that the woman is usually the one who talks more. After all, it is widely quoted that men say 7,000 words a day while women say 20,000. However, this figure, coming from a 2006 book called Female Brain, was questioned by lin-guist Mark Liebermann. Later, the author Louann Bridenzine confessed that she did not make a thorough study. What we find in many researches actually suggests differently. It all de-pends, according to scientists, on how you measure talkativeness. When a conversation is viewed from different ways, it is suggested hat men can be as or more talkative than women, and found out that when men are put into a lab and given a topic to talk about, they can show greater participation than women. It proves that when given a purpose, men can talk a lot. Other researches support this finding as well. Moreover, the same is found outside of the lab, in everyday conversation. Researcher James Pennebaker developed a device to record 30 sec-onds of sounds around the participants every 12.5 minutes, and collected the samples. The

We are still, however, left with the impression that women talk more even with all the evidence suggesting differently. In fact, it may just be one of the many areas in life where we expect men and women to be different. However, when the issue is closely examined, we may find that men and women are often more similar than we believe them to be.
