閱讀測驗

One of the biggest differences between men and women is how they cope with stress. Under stress, men become increasingly focused and withdrawn while women become increasingly overwhelmed and emotionally involved. At these times, a man’s needs for feeling good are different from a woman’s. He feels better by solving problems while she feels better by talking about problems. Understanding and accepting these differences reduces unnecessary friction in our relationships.

Let’s look at a common example. When Tom comes home from a stressful day, he wants to relax and unwind by quietly reading the news. If he encounters problems at work, he prefers to solve them by himself. Sometimes, he finds relief just by forgetting them. His wife, Mary, also wants to relax from her stressful day. However, she finds relief by talking about the problems of her day. Tom secretly thinks Mary talks too much, while Mary feels ignored. The tension which slowly builds up between them gradually becomes resentment.

This example is present in almost every male-female relationship. Solving this problem depends not on how much people love each other but on how much they understand the opposite sex. Insights about men and women can be gleaned by grasping every opportunity to understand how each gender deals with stress, motivation, fulfillment, and appreciation. A thorough comparison between men’s and women’s behavior may deepen mutual understanding and help improve their relationship.
