Each year the announcement of the nominees for the Oscars is met with much excitement and enthusiasm. However, when the nominees for the 2016 Oscars were announced, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science was greeted with a very public backlash. Some of the world’s biggest stars, including Will Smith and his wife Jada Pinkett Smith, even said they would boycott the awards ceremony. The reason why they would decline to attend is that all the nominees in the major performing categories were white.

Besides the performing categories, people of color were largely missing from the list of nominees as a whole. This observation even prompted a #OscarsSoWhite trend on Twitter, with many other stars expressing their strong opinions.

The obviousness of the problem, they said, should make it easy to find a solution. lf movies lack people of color, it is time to give those people their share of the spotlight. The United States is an extremely diverse country. Its racial diversity is one of its key features. Why, then, do

Hollywood movies mostly have white cast members? Furthermore, why are literary characters which might be Asian or African American played by white actors or actresses in the film version?

African American comedian Chris Rock drew attention to these 25 questions when he hosted the 2016 Oscars. Using his trademark wit and razor—sharp skills of observation, he roasted Hollywood’s whiteness. On one of the world’s biggest stages, he called for more racial diversity in Hollywood films.

Hollywood, for its part, seems to be responding to its previous 30 blindness on this issue. Notable directors like JJ. Abrams described the 2016 Oscars as a wake-up call. His production company, Bad Robot, pledged that it would include people of color in their productions. Their presence in his movies would accurately reflect their presence in the real world.

To put it more simply, if African Americans make up approximately 13 percent of the population, the cast of a movie should be 13 percent African is American or thereabouts.

Hollywood may have a long way to go to achieve that. But at present it looks like the American film industry is headed toward a more diverse future.

For over sixty years, the rate of voter participation in the United States has remained between 50% and 65% for presidential elections. This means that in general nearly half of eligible voters do not vote for president. Why is it that so many people choose not to exercise their democratic right to vote?

A 2004 study conducted by the California Voter Foundation attempts to answer this

question. The study compiled data from over 2,000 people. These people are identified either as nonvoters (defined as people who are eligible to vote but not registered) or as infrequent voters (defined as people who are registered to vote but have voted in one or none of the last four statewide elections). The stated purpose of the study is to better understand the barriers to voting in California.

Infrequent voters and nonvoters alike cited two main reasons why they did not vote. One common answer was “I have no time to vote.” Roughly 60% of those surveyed said they worked more than 40 hours per week. When informed of their right to take off work to vote, the same group responded that they “were unaware of such rights,” and that they would likely take advantage of them in the future now that they know. Over half also said they were not familiar with absentee voting, which is a way to vote before Election Day either by mail or in person. Another common reason people gave for not voting was “There are no candidates I believe in.” Participants widely reported the belief that politics is controlled by special interests and that their votes did not matter.

Nonvoters provided some additional information about why they are not registered to vote. 23% of nonvoters said they are not registered because they want their personal information to remain private. 18% of nonvoters actually thought that they were registered to vote, because they had obtained a driver’s license from the Department of Motor Vehicles.

Understanding these barriers to voting, both in California and the larger nation, is the first step toward doing something to increase voter participation in this country.

72. According to the California Voter Foundation study, what is the definition of “nonvoters” ? (A) people who do not vote because they feel their votes do not matter

(B) people who think they are registered to vote but are not (C) people who are registered to vote but do not ever vote (D) people who are qualified to vote but are not registered

73. Using the passage as a guide, we can understand that which of the following strategies would likely be effective at increasing voter participation?

I. increasing awareness about absentee voting

II. educating people about their right to take time off work to vote III. improving voter data privacy

(A) I only (B) I and II only (C) II and III only (D) I, II and III

74. In paragraph 3, the author writes, “Roughly 60% of those surveyed said they worked more than 40 hours per week.” Why does the writer mention it ?

(A) This statement is intended to provide the statistics of presidential elections in the study. (B) This statement is intended to support the point that people are too busy to vote.

(C) This statement is intended to introduce the voters’ ignorance of voter turnout. (D) This statement is intended to explain the effects of long working hours on health. 75. What is the author’s attitude toward increasing voter participation in the United States ?

(A) desirable (B) accusing (C) playful (D) suspicious

 Question76 to Question80

In December 2016, Edgar M. Welch, a 28-year-old father of two children, recently read online that a pizza restaurant owner, Hillary Clinton, had caused suffering to children. In order to see the situation for himself, Mr. Welch drove about six hours from his home. Not long after arriving at the pizzeria, Welch fired his assault-style weapon two or three times. The police arrested him, and they found a rifle and a handgun in the restaurant; fortunately, no one was hurt.

The story about Hillary Clinton is one of the most famous examples of the growing phenomenon dubbed ‘fake news’. The conspiracy theory about the pizzeria began to appear on websites and social networks in late October, before the US election. This was quickly

denounced by publications such as The New York Times and The Washington Post. However, many people thought that these papers were themselves lying for political ends and instead of disappearing, the fake story snowballed. Tweets from ‘Representative Steven Smith of the 15th District of Georgia’ claimed that the mainstream media were telling falsehoods. Even though both this name and district were invented, the message was re-tweeted many times. A YouTube refutation of the New York Times article got 250,000 hits.

Fake news stories can be hard to control for several reasons. Many people mistrust established news sources and others just don’t read them, so the debunking of a fake story by a serious newspaper or TV channel has limited effect. In addition, the internet is very hard to police. When users are caught misusing one media platform, they simply go to another one or start up a website themselves.

There are also various reasons why people create fake news. Some have political motives, to belittle or incriminate their opponents. Other websites, like The Onion, deliberately publish fake news as satire – humorous comment on society and current affairs. Another group is in it for the profit: many people clicking on entertaining fake news stories can bring in a lot of advertising revenue. One man running fake news sites from Los Angeles said he was making up to US$ 30,000 a month in this way. There are also those, like the small-town teenagers in Macedonia who wrote fake news stories about Donald Trump, who seem to be motivated partly by money and partly by boredom.

So, what can we do to stop fake news spreading? First, make sure that the websites you read are legitimate, for example by looking carefully at the domain name and the About Us section. Check the sources of any quotes or figures given in the story. Remember that amazing stories about famous people will be covered by the mainstream media if they are true. Only share

(5)

stories you know are true and let your friends know, tactfully, when they unknowingly share fake news. Together we can turn around the post-truth world!

76. Why did Edgar Welch go to the pizzeria?

(A) He was trying to commit robbery at the famous restaurant. (B) He hated all supporters of Hillary Clinton.

(C) He was working as a private investigator and investigating a crime. (D) He had become concerned after reading an untrue news story.

77. Why did many people not believe “The Washington Post” and “The New York Times” when they denounced the pizzeria story?

(A) They checked the facts and found that the articles were incorrect. (B) They didn’t trust anybody.

(C) They thought the newspapers had a political agenda.

(D) They thought the newspapers had not researched the story carefully enough.

78. Which reason for the difficulty of controlling fake news stories is not given in the article? (A) Many people don’t read the mainstream media.

(B) Online media platforms don't check stories before publishing them. (C) People are skeptical of the mainstream media.

(D) Fake news posters can easily switch to other websites and platforms if caught. 79. Which type of motivation for the creation of fake news is not given?

(A) It’s a way of making money from people who pay to read the stories. (B) It’s a way of commenting on current affairs.

(C) It’s a way of attacking your political opponents. (D) It’s a form of entertainment.

80. How does the author feel about stopping fake news spreading? (A) stubborn

(B) doubtful (C) positive (D) pessimistic
