16/03/2011 HKUST Professor Fugee Tsung Elected to World's Top Academy for Quality Prof Fugee Tsung, Head of the Department of Industrial Engineering and Logistics

Management at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), has been elected Academician to the International Academy for Quality (IAQ), the world's most prestigious global organization in the field of quality.

The IAQ comprises peer nominated members and admit academics and professionals identified as global thought leaders in quality-related issues. IAQ has elected

Academicians in 25 countries. Prof Tsung is the second IAQ Academician in Hong Kong, after President Way Kuo of City University of Hong Kong, and one of only six

Academicians in Greater China.

"Quality techniques have gained increasing attention in the Greater China region." Prof Tsung indicated, "For example, the China Association for Quality (CAQ) and Hong Kong Society for Quality (HKSQ) will jointly organize the Asian Network for Quality (ANQ) 2012 Congress at HKUST. This event will bring together around 500 quality professionals from most Asian countries."

Prof Tsung joined HKUST in 1997. He has a strong research record in quality control and improvement of complex systems in both manufacturing and service sectors. For this, he has been elected Fellow of the American Society for Quality (ASQ) and Fellow of the Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE). He has also twice received the Best Paper Award for the IIE Transactions, in 2004 and 2009 respectively. Last year, he received the Outstanding IIE Publication Award that recognizes an outstanding publication in any IIE-sponsored or co-sponsored medium.

Prof Tsung is also renowned for his academic leadership. He has been Regional Vice-President (Asia) of IIE since 2008, and Chair of the Service Science Section, the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS), where he was the Founding Vice-Chair in 2007. He was also the Chair of the Quality, Statistics, and Reliability (QSR) Section of INFORMS in 2004. Meanwhile, Prof Tsung is also the founding Chair of the Council of Industrial Engineering Department Heads in Greater China (CIEDHC).

Prof Tsung will receive his award during the European Organization for Quality Congress to be held in Budapest, Hungary, on 20 June 2011.
