V. Reading Comprehension: (16%)

(A) A recent study stated that 12 percent of the earth's birds are in danger

of extinction. And some ecologists think that another 14 percent of the world's birds will be gone in the next hundred years. If this is true, then more than 25 percent of the earth's birds will be extinct at the end of the century.

The loss of so many birds would have terrible results. Birds help spread seeds and pollen, and without them, the planet's ecology would be greatly affected. Birds are also an important part of the food chain. Some eat insects and others eat pests, while others are scavengers. If birds do not carry out their ecological tasks, the results can be terrible. For instance, as the number of vultures decreased in India during the 1990s, the number of wild dogs─and cases of rabies─increased.

Many scientists say that humans are responsible for this situation. The loss of the birds' natural habitats and the introduction of other animals to these

areas are two serious causes of the decline in the number of birds. Other activities, such as hunting, fishing, and logging, are also threatening birds. There is hope, though. For instance, in California recently, a condor born in a national wildlife refuge grew feathers and flew away from its nest. This was the first time that such an event had happened in 22 years. Cases such as this give scientists and ecologists hope that by protecting birds, the predictions of their disappearance will not come true.

63. Which of the following human activities is NOT mentioned that might do harm to the survival of birds?

(A) Cutting trees and then birds lose their nests.

(B) Catching the fish that are supposed to be birds feed.

(C) the survival of other animals (D) the growing condition of feathers 66. Which of the following creatures may the word "scavenger" in the second

paragraph mean?

(A) Vulture. (B) Pollen. (C) Dog. (D) Worm.

(B) There is a clothes store in London, England, which is worth visiting if you

are looking for something unusual. The shop, called "Cyberdog," is located in a busy tourist area called "Camden Market." Outside, the street is quiet and old-fashioned, but inside you will find yourself in something that resembles a spaceship. Here in this technological paradise, you will find battery-powered shirts, pants, and jackets that light up with moving patterns or even flash along with a disco beat.

Although these clothes might seem like something from a science fiction movie, there will soon be even more advanced "smart clothing" for sale in your local stores. For example, a German clothes maker has recently come up with the "mp3blue jacket" that combines an mp3 player and a mobile phone. There

are cloth buttons in the sleeves and a microphone in the collar. A British manufacturer has also created a keyboard, made of cloth, which can be sewn onto your pants so you can type wherever you go.

These inventions work with the tiny hi-tech threads in the cloth, which allow information to be transferred. There are all kinds of ideas on how this will be useful in the future: to keep track of your health, temperature, location, or even the climate around you. But for now, if you decide to purchase clothes that flash, play music, or through which you can talk to your friends, remember one thing: always remove the batteries before you wash them!,

67. The most important part of the advanced clothing that makes it work as a telephone is _____.

(A) spaceship (B) the keyboard (C) the electronic threads (D) the microphone

68. Which of the following is TRUE about the shop Cyberdog? (A) This shop looks very old-fashioned in design.
