One day, I heard a voice __(3)__ from a hospital room. “Ronald,” it called. I went in and found a small boy __(4)__ down. He looked weak. “His name is Billy,” his parents said. I did some magic tricks to cheer Billy up. Then we did some coloring together. Getting to know Billy and playing with him was wonderful, but I will remember holding him most of all. You see, touching children in any way is __(3)__ the rules for us Ronalds. This is to protect the children from infection. So when I saw Billy’s arms __(4)__, I hesitated. However, it __(5)__ that not holding Billy would make my whole visit with him pointless, so I did it. Sincerely,

Jeff McMullen

hospitals to __(1)__ sick children. One day, a little boy named Billy saw me passing his room and asked me to go inside. I did my best to make him feel better until he asked me to hold him. Unfortunately, there was an important rule I had to follow while I was dressed __(2)__ Ronald. To protect children from any __(3)__ I might be carrying, I was not allowed to touch them. I had never broken this rule before, but I __(4)__ it impossible to say no to Billy. could not do so. We colored a picture together __(1)__. I didn’t want to __(2)__ Billy, of course, but I also didn’t want to lose my job. As Ronald McDonald, I regularly visited sick children like Billy in the hospital, but I was not allowed to touch them. We finished our picture, and as I was about __(3)__, Billy asked me again to hold him. I thought about the possibility of losing my job. If that happened, I would probably soon lose my car and my home. I liked those things very much. However, at that moment, __(4)__ nothing was as important as the happiness of this sick boy who could never go home again. __(5)__ this, I decided to hold Billy despite the risk. 7. Dear McDonald’s,

I am writing to thank you for your “Ronald Day” program and for Jeff, the “Ronald” who visited us. My son Billy recently passed away after a long struggle with cancer. Billy was only five years old and found __(1)__ very hard to spend all his time in a hospital bed. That’s why the visit from “Ronald McDonald” (Jeff) meant so much. Jeff brought smiles and joy to a sad place. First, he entertained Billy with magic tricks. Next, he asked __(2)__ Billy wanted anything else before he left. Billy asked Jeff to hold him, and I saw that it made Jeff sad to __(3)__ Billy __(3)__. He explained that it was __(4)__ the rules for him to touch the children in the hospital. After they had played together for a while, Billy again asked to be hugged. This time Jeff did so, even though he thought he would be fired because of it. Billy died less than two days later, but he was happy at the end of his life thanks to that __(5)__. Please don’t punish Jeff for making my little boy happy.

Sincerely, Lisa Jones

8. I remember meeting Billy very clearly. I was walking down the hospital hallway,

__(1)__ tired after a long day of visiting sick children. __(2)__, from an open doorway, a small voice called, “Ronald! Ronald!” I entered the room and saw a small, very sick boy with his mother, grandparents, and a nurse. From the feeling in the room, it appeared __(3)__ the boy, Billy, did not have long to live. I entertained Billy with some magic tricks, and we colored a picture together. This __(4)__ him __(4)__, and after a while, he asked me to hold him. We then asked everyone but the nurse to leave the room and talked for 45 minutes.

Billy’s biggest concerns were not about himself; his younger brother was starting

kindergarten the following year, and Billy was worried that his brother wouldn’t be able to find his way home from school without Billy’s help. Billy was also __(5)__ that his dog would go hungry because he had hidden its bones before entering the hospital but couldn’t remember where. actors that McDonald’s hired to play Ronald McDonald. I appeared __(1)__ Ronald at a number of events, but my favorite was “Ronald Day,” a monthly occasion when I would visit sick children in hospital. It made me feel so proud when I saw the smiles __(2)__ by my visit. Many of the children didn’t have any other reason to be cheerful, so it felt good to __(3)__ in their lives on Ronald Day. I loved my job, and the McDonald’s __(4)__ loved the positive image it gave them. In fact, it seemed __(5)__ everyone in the hospital felt a little better after having seen Ronald, even the doctors and nurses. I brought a lot of smiles to a lot of people’s faces, but the ones I saw on Ronald Day will always mean the most to me.

10. Ajay Munot, a wealthy Indian businessman, had been saving money for his daughter’s

wedding for a very long time. __(1)__ is common in India to spend large amounts of money on weddings, and Ajay had saved over US$100,000. However, as the wedding day

approached, Ajay changed his mind about how to spend the money. Instead of making a big display of his wealth, he decided he wanted to __(2)__ his good fortune to others. Therefore, he began building houses for the homeless. In all, ninety homes were built, costing over $220,000, more than twice Ajay’s original budget!

These homes were not large or fancy, but they made a __(3)__ difference to all the people who now had somewhere to live with electricity and running water. Ajay’s daughter wasn’t upset about her father’s decision, __(4)__. She was happy to have a small wedding, __(5)__ it a wedding gift from her father to be able to help so many people. 1. The Marshmallow Challenge is a popular team-building exercise. In this challenge,

groups must work together to build the tallest structure that can support the weight of one marshmallow. __(1)__ only dry spaghetti, tape, string, a marshmallow, and 18 minutes to finish the challenge, the teams must work quickly. The Marshmallow Challenge has been conducted with architects, lawyers, managers, and children. In one study, the group __(2)__ built the highest structure were architects. However, children performed better than the other adult teams.

Why did children do so well? First, they worked quickly with __(3)__ had been given to them. The adults spent more time planning, so they had less time to adjust their designs. Second, children collaborated to understand __(4)__ to build the tallest structure. Adults wasted time __(5)__ a group leader.

In order to solve problems, we must collaborate and try new ideas. The Marshmallow Challenge helps people do that.

__(1)__ to do with the items in front of you. Using the dried spaghetti, string, and tape, your team must __(2)__ a tower that is strong enough to support a marshmallow. The tower can be of any design, but to win, your team’s tower must be taller than __(3)__ of the other teams. You have only eighteen minutes. Based on previous challenges, we have some tips to offer you. First, keep the time in mind. You should __(4)__ your sleeves and get started as soon as possible. Second, focus on your goal: creating the tallest tower. __(5)__, have fun with your teammates! The teams that work together best generally succeed. Are all of the teams ready? Then let the Marshmallow Challenge begin!

3. Can some spaghetti and a marshmallow really help build a stronger team? Yes they can,

thanks to an __(1)__ team-building exercise called the Marshmallow Challenge. Using twenty sticks of spaghetti, a yard of tape, and string, each team spends eighteen minutes __(2)__ to build a tower that can support their marshmallow. The team with the tallest tower wins. The Marshmallow Challenge __(3)__ with many very different groups around the world, with some interesting results. __(4)__, kindergartners usually do better than most adult teams. This is because kindergartners usually get started right away, proceeding by __(5)__ to find the best tower design. Adult teams often spend too long planning and have little time left over to build or fix problems that arise. The Marshmallow Challenge teaches teams how to work together, and how important it can be just to get started.

4. There is a popular team-building exercise that involves 20 sticks of dry spaghetti, a yard

of tape, and a yard of string. This exercise is known __(1)__ the Marshmallow Challenge. __(2)__ only those materials, each team must build a structure that can support the weight of one marshmallow. In addition, they must figure out __(3)__ to build the tallest structure. __(4)__ just 18 minutes to complete the task, each team must quickly learn how to collaborate.

The Marshmallow Challenge has now been conducted in many countries and with various groups of participants. These groups have included CEOs, lawyers, business

graduates, and even kindergarteners. Over the years, there __(5)__ some surprising results. In one group, the average height of all the structures __(6)__ 20 inches. A team of architects and engineers built the highest structure, and a team of CEOs performed slightly better than average, __(7)__ third. __(8)__ being the youngest, a team of kindergarteners performed better than most of the adult teams. The children __(9)__ some unique ideas, and unlike the adults, they got to work quickly. By contrast the adults wasted time __(10)__ who should be in charge.

The Marshmallow Challenge teaches us a lot. In order to solve problems, we must try new ideas and learn how to work well together. This challenge also shows us that adults are not always smarter than kids!

5. Lungteng Elementary School enjoyed an interesting exercise in teamwork yesterday

thanks to the Marshmallow Challenge. One team from each grade stood in front of a table holding the challenge __(1)__: dried spaghetti, tape, string, and a single marshmallow. After some instructions from the science teacher Ms. Wu, the teams began. Right away, differences were clear. The kindergarten team picked up the supplies and started __(2)__ them. The sixth graders began working together to __(3)__ a plan before they began building. __(4)__ being the youngest, the kindergartners had the tallest tower. The sixth-grade class came in second with a very strong design. In last place was the fifth-grade team, who spent most of their eighteen minutes arguing. 6. When we think about working together, we often think about it mostly as talking and

planning together. However, studies __(1)__ that show experts working together usually talk less than beginners. One researcher set out to discover how people work together in silence. She gave different groups a task to do together and asked them not to talk. __(2)__, they would have to communicate through gestures and notes on small squares of paper. Group members did not know each other before beginning to work and were given no time to introduce themselves. They simply had to __(3)__ their sleeves and get to work. Afterward, the team members were interviewed. They had found there were many benefits to working in silence. __(4)__, they felt more connected to their tasks, felt more equal, and shared more. They also felt safer making mistakes, because it wasn’t possible to explain or apologize. The big problem they found was giving __(5)__. Saying “thank you” or “congratulations” to a teammate was difficult without words. Do you think you could work on a team in total silence?

7. The Marshmallow Challenge—where teams create a tower out of dried spaghetti to

support a marshmallow—teaches many lessons about succeeding together. One of the big ones has to do with assumptions. It’s the same with any project. We may start by making a great plan, but every plan requires __(1)__ when it enters the real world.

In the Marshmallow Challenge, people often think that the marshmallow will be lighter than it really is. That’s why the teams that do best are __(2)__ who start building

immediately. They quickly learn useful details by __(3)__ the marshmallow. Other teams plan and discuss, believing their designs will be strong enough. Only when it’s time to finally put the marshmallow on top do they __(4)__ it’s actually too heavy.

Whether you’re building a pasta tower or solving problems in the real world, don’t be a team that plans and plans with incorrect information. And don’t rely on one person that you

think knows everything. __(5)__, begin by testing your assumptions together. Once you have real information, you can all work better, together.

8. The Marshmallow Challenge has surprised a lot of people. The idea—building a tower to

support a marshmallow out of spaghetti, tape, and string—is certainly __(1)__. But aside from that, the results are also interesting. Because this challenge __(2)__ in many places around the world, with many people, it’s possible to compare different groups of people. The average tower height is about twenty inches, but some groups usually perform significantly __(3)__ average. The worst are recent business graduates, whose towers tend to be about half the average. Lawyers don’t do much better either. The big reason for their poor performance is the same reason kindergartners do better than most adults: it’s all in how they __(4)__ their design. Business students and lawyers are trained to believe in one right answer, and they use most of their time talking to find that right answer. Kindergartners just __(5)__ and try the first idea they have. When the kindergartners’ designs fail, they have lots of time to try others. The business students run out of time.

9. Quality teamwork is one of the most important factors in an organization’s success. It’s

no surprise, therefore, that technology giant Google places a high value on __(1)__. In fact, the company spent years studying hundreds of teams to find out __(2)__ factors made up successful teams. At first, they hoped to find some system that could measure people’s personality types, and then put the similar types together to make a perfect team. __(3)__ trying many different ways of doing this, they did not find any perfect mix of personalities. However, Google did uncover the most important quality that separates teams that function well from __(4)__ that function poorly. This is called “psychological safety,” which is the team members’ shared belief that their team is safe for risk-taking. It means that all team members feel they can speak up without the person __(5)__ stopping them or others making fun of them. Psychological safety is developed when people work together toward common goals, which is why team-building activities can have such strong benefits.

Increasing trust, communication, and friendliness among the team members will also increase the team’s quality.

10. You might be surprised what kindergartners can teach us about facing a challenge in a

game. The Marshmallow Challenge __(1)__ with many different groups around the world; it has them build a tower out of spaghetti, tape, and string. Success is measured by the height of the tower, and kindergartners usually __(2)__ higher than most adults. One reason for this is that they don’t hesitate to get started. __(3)__ only eighteen minutes, a fast start makes a big difference. Adults do more talking and planning first, which leaves less time for the actual building. Another reason is kindergartners’ approach to problem-solving: rather than planning, they rely on __(4)__. They pick up the spaghetti and start testing ideas immediately. With unfamiliar conditions, experimenting right away works better than planning with limited information. Last, kindergartners are more __(5)__ their goal than worried about who they’re working with. Adults may argue about who’s the boss or whose idea is better, but

kindergartners just build. Next time you’re facing a challenge, maybe you should think like a kindergartner!
