Words from the 10th Graduation
Anniversary Dinner Organizing Committee
65
I have been very impressed by the Class of 1995's tremendous support, the high turn-out and the generous donations to the MBA Alumni Fund. It shows our affection for the School remains strong and this reunion will be well remembered. My special thanks to the Organizing Committee and sponsors for their contribution to the event's success. As an alumnus, I am extremely proud of how much the School has accomplished in the past 10 years. Marvelous!9)

The 10th Graduation Anniversary proved a great occasion, with enthusiastic participation by some 60 elites, including honorable guests, Business School staff, and fellow MBA classmates. The amount raised for the MBA Alumni Fund that evening was also more than satisfactory. Many thanks, classmates, for your generous donations. I am also happy to see all participants looking as young and energetic as 10 years ago!"In the past decade, we have all gone through recession, triggered by the Asian financial crisis in 1997 and exacerbated by the bird flu crises and SARS. I am glad we are still going strong after these difficult years, as reflected in a Class of 1995 survey conducted recently by the Organizing Committee. And I look forward to see everyone again at the 20th anniversary reunion in 2015.

How marvelous of everyone to create such an unforgettable night. It really was a wonderful evening for recollecting memories and old friends, and letting each other know the shape (of course, better) we are in now. Thanks must also go to the School for its endeavor in building up a world-class MBA program and its enthusiasm in helping to gather us together. It makes everyone of us proud to be an alumnus. ~Howard La; (prj

I was delighted to be a member of the Organizing Committee and it was very encouraging to receive such a good response from classmates. Looking back at old pictures, I was surprised to see how little we had changed since graduation. I hope to meet everyone again at future reunions. Let's not wait another 10 years though! ~Ray Heung (FT)

As one of the oldest members of the Class of 1995, I am probably also one of the first to enter retirement. I left CLP last June after working there for nearly 32 years. Now my regular routine involves doing some exercise and reading several newspapers each morning before accompanying my wife on a walk and taking care ofroutine chores. I also enjoy reading, and watching TV and
videos. My daughter and son have just completed
university and I don't need to support them financially. So life in retirement is comfortable. It also includes regular
trips away to different places with my wife.

I have now changed my role as a securities regulatorat Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Ltd and joined
'blue chip' Hang Lung Properties Ltd. Last September I
was admitted to the Board as an Executive Director. I find
commercial life really challenging and dynamic. Meanwhile,
my daughter and son, who were only small when I was
attending the MBA, are now at university/boarding school
in England. This means my husband and I will be
empty-nesters for a few years. Maybe it's time to return to HKUST
to take another degree!

Since graduation, we have seen HKUST start tocompete with other universities in global academic rankings. Sometimes we are up. Occasionally, we are down. I, however, never feel down when others ask me where I graduated because I see their jealous faces once they know the answer. This is the benchmark of which
we should be proud.

We started with a lot in common and have gained even more in the past 10 years. As reflected in the group's name, we were all fun-seeking, young, and looking for a good balance between work and outside life (rest)! In addition,we were all close in age and shared many friends and interests. Some were in
the same company. Most enjoyed very spicy food (we require at least four dishes of chili sauce when having a meal).
After graduation, we kept in contact and have developed our friendship further. Two families were based in Beijing and had regular outings; some of our children
attend the same school and we are now negotiating joint travel arrangements.
Meanwhile, our spouses have become friends and are organizing events that don't include us!
It is truly fantastic that the Garfield team got along so well and has managed to keep up such close contact over the years. We are now sure such great friendship will continue, helping us to feel both happy and young.

keeps drawing us closer and closer.

The MBA has given me job mobility in the past 10 years. During this time I have alsoworked outside Hong Kong. Recently, I have been learning Shanghainese, though not voluntarily, as I have been spending a lot of time in Shanghai. I got married just after graduation and now
have two girls in P2 and P3 respectively. This is probably my greatest achievement so far.
As I am writing, many memories of the MBA program come to mind. One is the fantastic sea
view from the canteen's full-length window. But the most unforgettable is the sUP'port of my
fellow classmates throughout the MBA program.

I had been a Treasury specialist since graduating from the London School of Economics. 'Once a trader, always a trader' the saying went. And I almost believed it. The MBA stretched not only my own horizons but those of my subsequent employers with regard to myprofessional/non-trading capabilities. After the MBA, I took up a management post in Singapore.
This test of the waters confirmed the attractions of the human side of the financial world. I then moved on to an even more interactive role in wealth management.
In 2004, I felt the seven-year itch, leading to a retirement plan. The following restful months
allowed me to think more about myself and society as I had sufficient time to read the
newspaper from start to finish every day. Our country is enormous and too big to rely on the
central government. My part might be meager, I concluded, but at least I could try to help.
Having realized the significance of networking and teamwork during my MBA days, I am now broadening my links via my involvement with China Team International, winner of the 2004
China Recruitment Firm of the Year award. I shall keep you posted as to future plans to help
our country. I am sure everyone of you wants to playa part. ~

Time flies and there have been lots of changes in the past 10 years. The ups and downsof the global economy have forced us to sharpen our edge to survive. Luckily, I have not had
to change job too often over these years. My career is still in environmental technology. The
biggest difference has been my move from the technical side to bottom-line management. I have also expanded my scope regarding the China market and invested in improving my Putonghua.
However, my family is still my number one priority. Although I have often had to be away in
West or North-East China, my wife and child always kept in touch by phone or email. Now
my child is studying in the US and my job is expanding to India. But we are still connected
electronically! ~

I don't have much to add about my career. However, I am very happy to tell you that lastMay my wife gave birth to our first baby - a girl we have named Sydney. Being a father is both
a life-time career and a rewarding experience. Sydney is now the center of our universe. ~

I gained promotion and with the housing allowance acquired a small flat. My interest inoutdoor activities increased. I participated in the 2000 Trailwalker and finished the walk despite
the bad weather. In 2004, I also took part in the Standard Chartered Marathon 10-kilometer
race and completed it in 1 hour and 10 minutes. This was a surprise to friends and family as
I had not done any special training beforehand. ~

After experiencing the return of Hong Kong's sovereignty to China, the Asian financial crisis, the SARS outbreak, and political upheavals,
I finally figured out the most important things in my life. Right now,
without a doubt, my family is my top priority, while fame and money
have moved down the list. As a mother, I am trying to ensure my girl
has a happy childhood. Without full-time employment, I definitely have
more time for my family. I think my life is currently taking another course,
one without grades, graduation and awards.

It has been an interesting, encouraging experience being a HKUSTMBA alumnus. In the past 10 years, HKUST has grown from a new, unfamiliar university to a well-regarded one. However, it was only when I discovered another three alumni in my previous department (of around 30 people) that I realized how quickly our presence had grown, at least
in the finance sector. What impresses me ev.en more is that alumni are
not only 'business-minded' as branded, but also enthusiastic in' h~lping
others, as shown by the commitment and achievements in Oxfam
Trailwalker over the past few years. Let's keep up this tradition!

I work in Modern Terminals, my second job since graduating fromthe MBA. My work involves strategy and objective setting, supplemented by financial planning, so I can really apply the knowledge I learned during the MBA. To be honest, I only understood the meaning of Vision and Strategy in the literal sense before attending the MBA. Now I apply
these concepts every day. Just shows that taking the HKUST MBA
does work!
My daughter is now almost eight and studying in P4 at an ESF school. She is a very talkative and outgoing girl. And, like many of my friends, I have taken up golf and play the occasional round (too busy for regular
games). A time-consuming but interesting sport, which I started to
enjoy after much practice, frustration, and hours in the sun.
I really look forward to seeing other classmates again at future r~union
