Introduction
1.1 Introduction to Computer Aided Design
Owing to the dramatic progress of the computer technologies and software engineering,
the computer aided engineering technology has become an infrastructure for industrial design,
analysis and manufacture of engineering products. Nowadays, the effective application of
advanced computer aided engineering technologies is a key component in the
competitiveness of Taiwan industry and even of global industry.
1.2 The Outline and Education Goal of the Curriculum
The
curriculum:SOLID MODELING USING PRO/Engineer (Aero 220) is designed to
produce a high quality technologist capable of applying the CAD tool-PRO/Engineer to perform
engineering conceptual design, to develop students’ knowledge of the basic framework of
CAE/CAD, to offer class students a comprehension of 2-D sketch and 3-D solid modeling
concept, to help class students familiar with the basic features available in Pro/Engineer for
2-D sketch and 3-D solid modeling, and to enable class students to learn how to perform
engineering part design using Pro/Engineer. In the class, both traditional and interactive
teaching skills are applied, including lectures tutorials, seminars, case studies, practical
assignments and project work. Students are also required to perform learning through
directed study, problem solving and project work. The course also encourages the use of
real-life examples and through the provision of opportunities to gain appropriate work
experience.
The program objective is to have a basic knowledge of the CAE/CAD technologies; to
understand the feature and basic framework of PRO/Engineer; to be aware of the process flow
of 3-D modeling using PRO/Engineer; to get familiar with the commands and methodology of
undertaking 2-D sketch, 3-D solid modeling, assembly, and 2-D drawing using PRO/Engineer;
to be able to conduct practical engineering conceptual design using PRO/Engineer; to work as
a team member to pursue design of engineering applications; and to be capable of making a
fine presentation of their design works to their classmates and instructor.

1.3 Final Term Project for the Curriculum
The term paper is made specifically for the final term project of the curriculum:SOLID
MODELING USING PRO/Engineer (Aero 220). Based on the program objective, we, students in
the class, are required to group a solid team and use all the necessary knowledge, tools and
skills learned from the class to conduct a final term project. The final term project is to perform
engineering conceptual design for any practical application through the existing commercial
CAD tool-PRO/Engineer. We are free to choose any engineering application they are interested
in as the design vehicle of the term project. For each team, there are at least 3 to 4 members.
In addition to the term paper, each team is also required to make an oral presentation of their
work using MS-powerpoint.
1.4 The Design Vehicle for the Term Project
Aircrafts shorten the distance of two points in the globe, and thus, make our space concept
smaller. It becomes very time-economic for people to travel all over the world for fun or
business by aircrafts. In this aspect, they bring about great convenience in our daily life. The
design vehicle for the final term project (Aero 220) is targeted on F16C. Prior to finalizing the
design vehicle, other applications, such as bikes, motorcycles and racing cars etc., have ever
been proposed. Group members eventually decided to take aircrafts as the most ideal
candidate for the final term project. Indeed, it is normal for us from the Department of
Aerospace and Systems Engineering to pick up them since most of students enrolled to the
department simply based on their special craze to aircrafts. However, there are hundreds to
thousands types of advanced aircrafts available nowadays, it becomes a tough assignment to
determine the final candidate, especially when there are four individuals in the group, each of
them consisting of a different, independent viewpoint and perspective. After some substantial
discussions and debates have been made among team members, we, the team, finally chose
F16C as the design vehicle of the final term project. Indeed, it is very difficult for us to make
the decision. Before the decision was made, we attempted to gather ideas by calling on several
department stores in Taichung, which are famous for selling a variety of small-scale aircraft

models. At first, among those wide varieties of aircraft models, F-117A was the preferred
target since it consists of a unique and very attractive configuration. However, F-117A is much
less streamline as compared to F16C. Even though CAD of F16C seems much more
challenging than F117-A due to its complicated geometry shape, all team members are still
willing to take the challenge, and go for the F16C because F16 is the mainstream fighter in
Taiwan’s air force.
From the decision-making process of he design vehicle, few essential points have been
learned by the team members. Negotiations and strong leadership make a difference. Despite
that there are some oppositions and arguments among team members in making the choice,
we are very happy that team members can give up their personal, subjective opinions and
finally, reach agreement and more importantly, successfully complete the project through
every team member’s joint effort.

1.5 The design process toward the completion of the term project

2005 May.24 A preliminary discussion is made on class about what kind
of applications would be the design vehicle of the term
project. In the beginning, we thought we could carry out a
destroyer design, but we are short of the dimension and
detailed configuration of the destroyer. We can do nothing
but giving up the idea.
2005 May.27 In the last three days, every member in the team did their
best to try to figure out an inspiring target. Finally, we
decided to target on aircrafts.

2005 May.30 We search for any possible ideal aircraft through Internet,
and finally, we obtain some data and materials related to
F-16C, including background, pictures and geometry
dimension. Members of the team finally reach agreement
to go for F-16C as the design vehicle of the final term
project.
2005 Jun.1 We purchased two 1/48-scale F-16C models in order to
closely look up their geometry layout and shape and
dimension.
2005 Jun.3 We have the first meeting about how we shall start to
perform CAD of the F-16C.
2005 Jun.4 Task is assigned to each team member such that each
member could get involved in a part of the component
design of the aircraft. More importantly, They are asked to
finish their job on time.
2005 Jun.6 We have a design meeting to exchange and share their
experience and thoughts, and discuss any problem and
difficulty that are encountered in their design.
2005 Jun.8 Appropriate interface for these component designs of the
aircraft is defined and enforced.
2005 Jun.9 Almost 70% of the design work is completed. Again,
interface of these component designs for subsequent
assembly is double-checked and ensured.

Jun.10 Each team member completes their own design
assignment and then, final assembly is made to
accomplish the design of a prototype of F16C. Engineering
drawing of the aircraft is also made.
2005 Jun.11 The term paper is completed, and an oral presentation file
is also made using MS-Powerpoint.
