HKUST DELIVERS FIRST COMPUTER SCIENCE GRADUATES
The first class of 100 students in the Department of Computer Science of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) will graduate this summer.
Professor Vincent Shen predicts that about 20 to 30% of them will further their studies in ‘J. -. I_ postgraduate programmes, while the rest will enter the working world. “In all, the universities in Hong Kong will be producing a few hundred graduates in computer science and related studies this year. There will be keen competition for jobs and for further studies,” he said.
Professor Shen has great confidence in HKUST students. “Our students have been involved in a lot of research projects, some of which were in areas that are at the cutting edge of computer technology-- areas such as computer vision, artificial intelligence, networking, image processing, data-base and knowledge base, and software technology. Employers know and welcome our graduates, and some HKUST graduates have also been well received by postgraduate schools,” he said.
He cited two outstanding examples. Mr Alvin Lo has been accepted by the graduate school of the University of Texas at Austin, one of the top schools in computer science in the U.S. to continue his studies in artificial intelligence there. Miss Karen Lee will join a consulting firm, Anderson Consulting. With her dynamic character and her outstanding record of extra-curricular ._. activities, she was amongst the first of HKUST’s computer science graduates to be offered a job. Professor Shen expects computer science to remain a popular subject for many years to come. “We are going to start a computer engineering programme this fall. We expect that about 80 to 100 new students will be enrolled. This is an interdisciplinary programme jointly offered by the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering and the Department of Computer Science. Already some very high quality students have applied,” he said.
