Previous studies on Taiwan’s real wage during the Japanese era focused on the is-sue that if the Taiwanese real income increased with the economic growth. During the colonial period, Taiwan was an agricultural economy, the labor and capital in the sector were mostly provided by the Taiwanese. So a high growth rate in the agricultural output implies that the Taiwanese’s income in the agricultural sector increased with the output. On the other hand, under certain assumptions about the labor market, real wage should increase with labor productivity. Our examina-tion on the wage data shows that this hypothesis is not completely consistent with the wage data.
