The Knowledge and Attitude of Pain Assessment and Management on

Pediatric Nurses

Purpose: Nurses are the key health care professionals with responsible for managing children's pain. The knowledge and attitude of pediatric nurses is a factor critical to assisting the children care. The purpose of the study was to explore the nurses' knowledge and attitude of children pain assessment and management.

Methods: A descriptive study was designed by survey questionnaire. The sample consists of 120 pediatric nurses from pediatric unites in a medical center in the central Taiwan. The questions include nurses' knowledge, attitude of children pain assessment and management, and self efficacy in managing the children pain.

Results: The result revealed that the correct answer rate of nurses' pain knowledge and attitude was 51.76% with mean score 21.72±4.58 (total 42). The lowest score was the knowledge related with pharmaceutical pain management. The mean score of self-efficacy was 13.78±4.12 (total 24). There is a significantly correlation between pain knowledge, self-efficacy, and work unit (p< .05). Nurses who had been attended pain related classes had better self-efficacy of pain management with significantly difference (p< .05).

Implications for Practice: The pediatric nurses are lack of the knowledge and attitude of pain.

Especially, the knowledge of pain pharmacy management is urgently needed. The study suggests that continued training program of children pain management is needed for improving the pediatric nurses' competence of children pain assessment and management.
