Are boys smarter than girls? It is an old question. ( 23 ) a boy, and the answer will likely be “yes.” But a girl may answer “maybe”, along with a smile that says, “Of course not, stupid!” For a long time, (2 4 ) was generally believed that boys were smarter, but a new study of academic results ( 25 ) shown that male and female students are quite “even” in most areas.

The study, conducted by the U.S. Educational Testing Service, looked at test scores and other measures of achievement from students in the fourth, eighth, and twelfth grades. It found that ( 26 ) gender was far ahead of the other; only small differences existed. Boys scored slightly higher in math and science and were better at technical subjects. Girls were stronger in language skills and in some other areas.

The old idea that boys are smarter than girls must certainly be reexamined. We must also ask whether girls are ( 27 ) by society’s lesser expectations of them.

【C】 A Review of Kobie the Strong Man

This week on Movie Corner, I want to see the movie Kobie the Strong Man. This movie not only has a good story but ( 32 ) us think about what being strong truly means.

In the movie, Kobie’s parents are killed by a bad man ( 33 ) Satin. Satin’s people take Kobie away and make him work. Then, they make him fight, and others watch this as a show. One day, Kobie runs away. He wants to find Satin and kill him. On the way, Kobie makes three friends: Volta, Minowa, and Dukin. They help Kobie fight the bad people that come for him. Later, Kobie finds Satin, but he doesn’t kill him. He does something else because Satin, who stands before him, says some words to him. What does Kobie do and what does Satin say? Of course, I’m not telling you here. I’ll keep it a secret for you to find out.

To be honest, the movie is full of fights. This might ( 34 ) people who like fights. However, the story itself is really great. The part in ( 35 ) Kobie’s new friends try their best to help him moved me. Finally, what does “being strong” mean? I think those ( 36 ) win with their minds are the real strong ones. What’s your answer? Tell me after you watch the movie!

【D】 Thank you ( 37 ) the National Museum of Art. I will show you around the museum today. This year, we have collected new pieces of art. Some of them were given by a very kind artist, and

( 38 ) were bought by the museum at very high prices. We will also see some of the museum’s oldest and most famous pieces of art.

Now, before we begin, I must tell you some of the museum’s rules. First, please don’t touch the artwork. Second, taking pictures is fine but please ask before you do so. Some of the art is very old and the camera’s light may hurt the paint. Third, don’t run or shout in the museum. Last, don’t eat or drink in the museum, but water is fine.

OK, let’s go! The first painting is An Old Boat and A Man. Look at the beautiful colors that the artist used to paint the water in the sea. Next is the famous painting, Blue Flower. Do you see how the light makes the flower shine? The light is carefully set to make it look like sunlight. ( 39 ) it looks!

The third painting is a portrait of a famous writer. He asked the artist to paint it as a gift for his wife.

Well, I want to leave you some time to look ( 40 ) at the pieces on your own, so it will be the end of our talk at the National Museum today. I hope you enjoyed your time here. Have fun!

【E】 Every year many accidents happen on Taiwan’s roads, hurting or killing hundreds of people. The saddest thing about most of them is that they would not have happened if the people driving had been more careful.

One of the most dangerous habits people have is talking on their cell phones as they drive. Although most people know it is wrong to do this, it still happens very often.

When people talk on a cell phone, they have to take one hand off of the steering wheel. Also, when they are talking on the phone, they are thinking about who they are talking to and not about the road in front of them. This means that the person is not able to react quickly if there is a problem.

The police fine people $1,000 for talking on a cell phone when driving a motorcycle. People driving a car are fined $3,000. If people feel they need to talk on the phone when they are driving, they can use the ear pieces that let them talk without using their hands. But people need to remember that the most

Reading in Taiwan

A study shows that people in Taiwan read less and spent less on books in 2014 than they did in 2010.

In 2010, people above 18 years old spent 3.6 hours per week reading books, and in 2014, the time dropped to 2.76 hours. On average, people of this age group read 2.02 books per month in 2010, and the number went down to 1.7 in 2014. They bought 4.13 books and spent NT$1,326 on books in 2014, a little less than the 4.23 and the NT$1,461 in 2010.

Why did these people leave books behind? Many believe it was because of the Internet. The study finds these people spent 1.28 hours on the Internet every day in 2010, and the time rose to 1.44 hours in 2014. This means on average each of them spent 1.12 more hours on the Net instead of books per week.

In the study, these people were also asked about their favorite places to read when they did open a book. Most said they liked to read at home (88.1%) , in the library (17.1%) , and public places (13.0%) . Only 2.6% of the people read on the bus, the train, or the MRT.

They were also asked why they read. The top three reasons are to get knowledge (72.9%) , to have fun and relax (50.2%) , and to find more to talk about with friends (43.3%) .
