The Unceasing Appearances of
Alternative Spaces in 90's Taiwan Art Area
Lin, Pin-Siou
Institute of Art Studies, National Cheng-Kung University
Abstract
The unceasing appearances of alternative spaces were a special phenomenon in 90's Taiwan art area. The reason was closely concerned with develop of Taiwan's contemporary art. At that time the works deeply criticized, full of experiments, and needed places to co-operate like the installation arts were hard to enter the museum of arts and the cultural center. Therefore, artists themselves used corporal places to provide them not only for getting together and for interflowing but also for exhibition of contemporary arts. Differing from the legitimacy of commercial gallery and museum of arts, they were antiestablishment and non-profit; therefore they became the experimental, fringe, and alternative spaces of avant-garde arts. However, they drew attention of the experts and scholars and were also the spaces for artists to accomplish their ideals. As time goes by, the alternative spaces have troubles in operating, so they receive official subsidizations. As a result, avant-garde arts change into main stream and lose their alternative space properties against authority. Turning into main stream, alternative space become the exhibition space that can compete with museum of arts, cultural centers, and galleries.
