English Literature II (Romantic Period) – 3 credits Instructor: Father Daniel J. Bauer Ph.D.

The purpose of English Literature II is to acquaint students some of the major writers and works of that period of the 18

and 19

th

century we term “romantic.” The

romantic period especially stressed the individuality of the human person, the close relationship of human beings with nature, and the value of emotions in a personal search for the meaning of life. Although that brief description may appear abstract, in fact, the imagery usually shared by romantic period writers is very concrete and may criticize society and various shortcomings in human behavior.

Among the writers we will read are Anna Barbauld, William Blake, William Wordsworth, and Samuel Taylor Coleridge.

Students are expected to not only participate well in class, but to also write 4 journals (4 pages A-4 paper, minimum) which share reflection and reactions to the literature, and take a mid-term and final exam.
