Vampires and their features are well known in modern fiction. 61 . Some, like Dracula, are rich, handsome men who live in dark castles.

The roots of this creature can be found in cultures around the world, but modern vampire mythology comes from European beliefs from the 17th and 18th centuries. 62 . There were often reports of dead bodies making noises in graveyards. When these bodies were dug up, they were seen growing beards or bleeding from their noses. Government officials would hold public “killings” of these possible vampires, driving sharp poles through their chests before re-burying them.

Similar creatures appeared in folk tales all over the Europe, from Greece in the south to Russia in the north. There are some reasonable theories that explain why vampires appeared in such a wide variety of cultures.

Diseases were common before modern medicine, but there was little understanding about how they spread.

63 .

Lack of scientific knowledge also explains why vampires were seen in graveyards. 64 . Blood remained in bodies and would be squeezed out of the nose and mouth as the body shrank. Similarly, beards that hadn’t grown out would push through skin as it tightened. The noises that were made by corpses came from air that was trapped in the body escaping through the throat.

Although vampire beliefs have been explained away, these creatures remain famous in modern culture.

This is thanks to Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel Dracula. Stoker’s vampire, who turns into a bat and sleeps in a coffin, has been a character in a great number of movies and TV shows.

(A) It was easier for people to believe invisible forces like vampires were slowly killing off their communities.

(B) In those times, dead bodies were often buried without being prepared the way they are today.

(C) They have pointed teeth, drink blood, and can only be killed by being stabbed in the heart.

(D) In France, many Catholics believed that the spirits of dead people could return to their graves in human form to suck blood from their own bodies.

Some of the most difficult criminal cases that judges and lawyers face in court are the ones that involve some form of mental illness. People who are charged with a crime have the choice to say they couldn’t control themselves because of insanity. 65 . In legal terms, this is called “malingering.”

Mental illness is difficult to claim in a court case. In one famous case, the head of a murderous crime family in New York, Vincent Gigante, tried to avoid jail time by pretending to be detached from reality. He walked around the city in a bath robe, talked to the air, and did not seem to recognize other people. It wans’t until many years later that it was proven that Gigante had been faking it.

In Gigante’s case, justice was delayed. 66 . In one case, a murderer tried to fake paranoid schizophrenia during his trial, only to be caught when the police found a letter he wrote to a friend in which he admitted what he had been doing. It was only luck that helped the justice system put him in jail.

There are ways that doctors can look for malingering. For instance, malingerers often exaggerate their symptoms. A schizophrenic person may believe they are seeing people who are not there. 67 . Unusual symptoms don’t prove malingering, but they can be a clue.

Malingering puts doctors in an awkward position. 68 . However, a doctor is trained to treat the symptoms they see, not to investigate if a person is lying. In most of these cases, it’s up to judges to decide whether or not to believe what they see.

(A) They are often called to trials to determine if a suspect is acting.

(B) However, one study estimated that about 17% of criminals who plead insanity are, in effect, trying to fake their symptoms.

(C) A malingerer might pretend to be schizophrenic by reporting seeing large, colorful animals or other grand but unrealistic scenes.

(D) For others, malingering goes completely undetected, and criminals are able to receive light sentences or be sent to relatively comfortable hospitals instead of prison.

VI. 閱讀測驗(每題 1 分,共 4 分)

The concept of a travel document, which shows a person is under a ruler’s protection while in a foreign land, has probably existed since rulers and states were first invented. But the earliest mention of an object which we might recognize as a passport appeared in about 450 B.C. The Hebrew Bible states that Nehemiah, an official serving King Artaxerxes of ancient Persia, asked permission to travel to Judah. The King agreed and gave Nehemiah a letter “to the governors of the province beyond the river,” requesting safe passage for him as he travelled through their lands.

Later, in the medieval Islamic Caliphate, a form of passport was the bara’a, a receipt for taxes paid.

Only people who paid their taxes were permitted to travel to different regions of the Caliphate. In medieval Europe, on the other hand, travel documents were issued by local authorities, and generally contained a list of towns and cities which the document holder was permitted to enter or pass through. On the whole, documents were not required for travel to seaports, which were considered open trading points, but documents were required to travel inland from seaports.

King Henry V of England is credited with having invented the first true passport, as a way of helping his subjects prove who they were in foreign lands. The earliest reference to these documents is found in a 15th-century Act of Parliament, while the term “passport” came into use about a century later. Nevertheless, passports were not generally required for international travel until the First World War. It was at this time that passports as we would recognize them today began to be used. VII. 混合題(每題 2 分,全對才給分,共 6 分。請將下列 73、74、75 題的答案寫在答案卡背面) Homeschooling has been growing quickly over the last decade. For example, it is estimated that from 2015 to 2020, the number of American families that started homeschooling doubled. Yet homeschooling is still subject to myths and misunderstandings. First of all, most people think that homeschoolers don’t socialize as much as those who attend traditional schools. The truth, however, is that homeschoolers can socialize more. For them, learning takes place in more places than inside a classroom. By routinely visiting museums, parks, science centers, and other places, they have more opportunities to socialize with adults and other people.

In addition, people might have the impression that homeschoolers do not go to college. In fact, homeschoolers are more likely to attend college than traditionally schooled students. Furthermore, when homeschoolers are enrolled, they are also more likely to stay in and graduate. Other data suggests that

homeschooled students generally perform better on tests. Another incorrect claim is that homeschoolers lack the opportunity to play sports or participate in extracurricular activities. What most people don’t know is that many public schools allow homeschoolers to play on school sports teams or participate in other after-school activities.

One key benefit of homeschooling is flexibility for families, so there is no shortage of time for kids to be active outside their daily learning. Since homeschooling is personalized by its nature, you can mold it to best fit your family’s needs.

73. Which of the following graphs best represents the development of homeschooling in the United States?

(A) (B)

(C) (D)

74. What is the author’s attitude toward homeschooling?

(A) Approving. (B) Opposed. (C) Indifferent. (D) Neutral.

75. Why do homeschoolers have more opportunities to interact with other people? Find two sentences from the passage and copy them.
