CONSUMER PRICE INDEX

The Composite CPI edged up by 0.04% month-to-month. Price index of Transport recorded notable growth owing to higher airfares and increasing gasoline prices.

Despite retreating prices of vegetables and rice, price index of Food & Non-Alcoholic Beverages increased on account of rising prices of fresh fish and fruits as well as dearer charges for eating out. Meanwhile, price indices of Housing & Fuels and Recreation & Culture decreased due to receding prices of Liquefied Petroleum Gas and lower hotel room rates.

For the 12 months ended May 2021, the average Composite CPI went down by 0.50% from the previous period (June 2019 to May 2020). The average Composite CPI for the first five months of 2021 dropped by 0.85% year-on-year.

The Composite CPI decreased by 0.51% year-on-year to 102.51, attributable to falling pork prices as well as lower charges for package tours and telecommunication services; however, the decrease was partially offset by higher airfares, dearer prices of Liquefied Petroleum Gas and fruits, rising charges for electricity and eating out, along with increasing wages of domestic helpers.
