I see no "big differ-ence apart from the change of nati"onal emblems.in front of government buildings and the hoisting of the national flag at lJST's north gate.’,On the economic· side,-he is

I'm not worried about my future. I’II do my best;’she said. Mai·cus Wu Chi Wai (PHYS, 2) had not realized that it had been a whole year since Hong Kong

Zhou Feizhou (SOSC, PhD)

It has been two years since I came to UST to do a PhD. Here I have experienced the return of Hong Korig to China. I can deeply feel the slight anxiety and feeling of resignation among my Hong Kong friends and class-mates. Students on the Chinese

Mainland shared similar feelings after 1989. But n0,w you hardly see any signs of resig-nation or indifference among students on the Mainland. When compared with Hong Kong students, they are more aggressive in seizing every possible chance to change · their life, keeping politics at a certain dis

tance. The changes in Hong Kong before and after.its return to China are not greater than the changes on the Chinese Mainland before and after 1989, and no matter what, its prospect for political construction is more promising. I think political idealiza-tion is most easily found. among students and young people, particularly when they are at the juncture of great historical events.

B呵, whatreally pushes history ahead may not be strong political participation. Keep-'ing a rational detachment will do more

good to both personal life and the building up of Hong Kong

The new laboratot弘 calledSiGNAL, or the Sino German Nano Analytical Lab, was opened by Prof Chia-Wei Woo, President of HKUST, ;ind Mr Wolfgang Gerz, German Consul-General in Hong Kong. The laboratory is a key component of the German Center in HKUST's Europe Institute.

Over the next teq to twenty ye司rs,the use of custom-designed sensors to detect biochemical changes at the molecular and submolecular levels is expected to have far-reaching consequences

in medical,的wironmentaland industrial appl_ications.

At SiGNAL, German and Chinese.academic and industrial part-ners will work together to develop innovati而 biosensorsfor use in

Hong Kong, the Chinese mainland and the Asia Pacific region. Already in

development are sensors for monitor-ing organic pollution in seawater and the physical training of athletes.

Quick and reliable sensors to detect the onset of a heart attack, the presence of dangerous bacteria such as E. coli and Salmonella or the use of illicit drugs are also being developed.

The new laboratory is housed in,

HKUST's Department of Chemistry and is led by Prof Reinhard Renne berg, former head of the Department of Immunosensors at the Fraunhofer Institute of Chemical and Biosensors in

English Update

To minimize confusion caused by the use of alternate English spellings on campus, it has been felt for some time that the University as an institution

should eventually adopt consistent spellings in names of carnpus entities, including those of departments, pro-grams, institutes, centers and other facilities. Beginning in 1998-99, an attempt will be made to spell all cam-pus names in a consistent manner in

University publications, using the so called American system. For the guid-ance of staff, an updated list of standard terminology and titles will be available from OPA in tl1e fall semester.

Spellings in use on Universit }「

stationery and busin巳ss cards will be updated gradually, as current stocks are depleted. Campus signage

,~

,rill also be updated gradually, ac\'.ording to need. The University

s need for stylistic consistency does not, of course, restrict

individual language use or preferences.

In a culturally diverse community, it is or other special circumstances, office

hoped that matters of individual taste space may be granted by the relevant and style can continue to be exempt department.

from dispute.

Hsieh (Mathematics), and Chih-Kang Shen (Civil Engineering) for reaching the safe harbor of tetirement and becoming the first three members of UST

s academic staff to be honored with the Emeritus ti_tle.

Created by the Council in 1996, the Emer_itus title is awarded to selected

Fashion

Statement

ftg:::,'.

tele丸rision shm> really rang a

bell with me. The popular

stand-up comic remarked that his father

had become a l也1dof fashion museum, wearing clothes'that were identical to

those he had worn 30 years previously.

Since I am probably not much

younger th司nJerry Seinfeld

s father, I

wondered if the same might be true of

me. Sure enough, I realized 出atwhen I

was back in the U.S. a month or so ago,

I went to the same area in the same Sears store where I had been shopping for

pants for the past 25 years. Following an

intense search, I managed to find two pairs of casual pants, one brown and

one blue, that were as near as I could 自1d

to the ones I had been-buying there since time immemorial. I also reafized that I

found my ideal shoes in about 1985, and kept buying 出Eexact same shoe Lintil

the company that made them went out of business. Fortunately, I have found an almost identical model made by some-one else.

I am not sure whether this is simply because it makes shopping easier to

know what you are looking for, or a case of a pattern being frozen in. Perhaps it is a phenomenon like speech, where

until an age sometime in the early teens

ON THE LIGHT SIDE

anyone can leal'11 to speak another

language with a native-speaker's pronunciation. But after that, the speech

patterns are frozen in, and the best most

of us can ever do is to speak other

languages with an accent. By analogy,

maybe sometime between our mid-30s

and mid-40s our fashion sense gets

frozen in, and we can no longer wear foreign (i.e., newer) fashions without an accent (i.e., looking and feeling strange).

I think college professors may be

especially at risk here, because of the tendency of the young academic to

follow the fashions of his even yo1Jnger students. So there is a chance they will

get frozen into· a fashion that the

students themselves ,心.rilloutgrow.Jf this

is the case, then years from now we will see quite old professors wearing really baggy shorts and enormous tennis

shoes, with their baseball caps on

backwards.

If this Ia.st sounds intolerant, I guess

it is the obvious case of the older generation thinking the preferred dress

of the younger looks pretty dumb. I

recently asked my son why people

thought they looked cool when they

obviously looked ridiculous. He an-swered by suggesting the origin of the latest trend in youthful attire, illustrated

in the accompanying cartoon.

One of the mos 仁 impres·sive

events I have experienced here is 、

Valentine’s Day. Despite their heavy

workload, the boys from a boys' dor-mitory decorated our dordor-mitory (a

girls' dormitory), including the

wom凹,swashroom, with ail kinds of

funny and intriguing things at mid-night just to astonish us on the next

Academically, classes here are more or less the same as tl1ose we have

in Hong Kong, except that the profes-sors are eager to encourage students

to participate in classes and students are also enthusiastic about asking
