The California condor, a majestic bird with a wingspan of up to 9.5 feet, is one of the world's most endangered species. In the 1980s, the population of this very social raptor declined to about twenty-five birds. A captive breeding program was established, and in 1992 the first captive-bred condors were reintroduced into the wild.
In "Ecosystem Simulations and Chaos on the Graphing Calculator," Robb Sinn extends an ecosystem unit in his classroom to the study of endangered species such as the condor. Some of the mathematics Sinn uses with his algebra students includes working with parameters, pattern seeking, home screen iteration on the calcula- tor, and linear, quadratic, cubic, and logistic functions.
