Discussion about the perspective of

loyalty and righteousness of Sima Qian

Abstract

Shiji, following the spirit of Spring and Autumn Annals, is a masterpiece which illustrates political morality. Influenced by the historical background at that time and Sima Qian’s life experience, Shiji is full of the depiction of loyalty and righteousness. Historical figures portrayed by Sima Qian are favored because of the characteristics of loyalty and righteousness they possess. Sima Qian indirectly expresses his opinions on politics by praising the accomplishments of the biographers. From the vibrant and realistic descriptions of those historical figures, we can understand Sima Qian has already regarded loyalty and righteousness as the epitome of political morality and the pursuit of personal value of life.
