Top tips for ice-skating beginners

By Kevin Chan (i)

Ice-skating began in Europe. People in the past wore skates in order to walk faster on ice in winter. Later it became a popular winter sport. At that time, people made the skates with animal bones. Today there is a metal blade that looks like a sharp knife on the bottom of a skate.

(ii)

Before you get on to the ice rink, make sure you dress properly. Wear comfortable trousers that allow you to move freely. Avoid wearing shorts as you may hurt your knees when you fall on the ice. Remember to put on skates that fit you well. In addition, you can wear gloves to keep your hands warm.

(iii)

Learning how to fall is very important before you skate. If you fall, remember to bend your knees and land on your bottom. This prevents you from hurting your head, which could cause more serious harm. Standing on thin blades is not easy. Beginners can hold on to a handrail to stand. Bend your knees a bit to balance. Learning how to stop is also a must. One easy way to stop is to make a ‘T’ shape with your feet. Now you can start walking on the ice. Once you feel comfortable with that, you can speed up and skate! After learning these fundamental skills, you can try to do more difficult moves, such as moving backward, spinning and jumping.

(iv)

In order to skate safely, remember to skate with someone experienced or learn from a coach. Do not skate too fast when the ice rink is crowded. You may bump into other skaters and get hurt easily. Beginners, especially young children, can wear a helmet for further protection. Practise as much as you can and experience the joy of ice-skating!
