The Composite CPI reflects the impacts of price changes on the general population. The CPI-A relates to about 49% of households, which have an average monthly expenditure of MOP 3,000 to MOP 9,999. The CPI-B relates to about 31% of households, which have an average monthly expenditure of MOP 10,000 to MOP 19,999.

The Composite CPI for October 2007 rose by 0.58% over September to 116.49, which was mainly attributable to the increase in the price indices of Housing & fuels; Clothing & footwear; and Transport.

Compared with September 2007, the indices of Clothing & footwear; Transport; and Housing & fuels recorded notable increases of 3.22%, 1.41% and 0.85% respectively, on account of dearer prices of the Autumn/Winter clothing and gasoline, rising charges for the maintenance and repair services of dwelling, as well as upward Tariff Clause Adjustment of electricity charges. It was noteworthy that in spite of the charges for meals bought away from home continued rising, part of the increment was offset with lower prices of vegetables, narrowing the increase of the index of Food & non-alcoholic beverages to 0.17%.

On the other hand, the index of Communication was the only section that recorded a 0.01% decrease, as a result of lower prices of mobile phones.

The Composite CPI for October 2007 registered a year-on-year increase of 6.18%. The average Composite CPI for January to October went up by 5.29% over the same period of 2006. For the 12 months ended October 2007, the average Composite CPI rose by 5.16% over the previous period.

In addition, the CPI-A and CPI-B for October 2007 were 118.06 and 116.15, up by 0.39% and 0.63% respectively compared with September.
