Programme Delivery Period

From mid June to October 2022 (4.5 months) Medium of Instruction Course Material: Chinese

Class teaching/ Discussion: Cantonese

Objectives To provide knowledge to gifted students on the process of conducting historical research through participation in authentic and on-going research projects under the purview of the host organisation;

To equip gifted students with the skills useful for independent historical research such as information search, literature review and collection of first-hand information and data through the study of Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) of Hong Kong; and

To promote appreciation of Chinese History and traditional culture, and nurture positive values and attitudes among students such as perseverance, responsibility, respect for others, diligence, etc. essential for the growth and future development of the students.

Programme Outline* The programme aims to develop gifted students’ knowledge and skills in historical research through participation in authentic and on-going research projects. Mentorship with individual guidance and support will be provided to facilitate students to complete their tasks. The programme also helps to nurture positive values and attitudes that are essential for students’ growth and future development. The programme consists of three phases.

Phase I: Induction training (2 hours)

A lecture on the major objectives of the programme, historical research methodology & processes, main tasks to be completed by students in this programme, mentorship and support arrangements, etc.

Phase II: Guided project (about 5 months)

 Lectures and Workshop on the following topics:

- Lectures: Introduction to Intangible Cultural Heritage - Workshop: Conducting Oral History Interviews

 Group Project with Mentorship

The following four selected ICH research projects are available for students’ investigation:

- Hong Kong-style Milk Tea Making Technique

- Technique of Making Hong Kong Cheongsam and Kwan Kwa Wedding Costume

- Spring and Autumn Ancestral Worship of Clans - Bamboo Theatre Building Technique

Students will meet the instructor/ mentors once every week to report the work progress and receive advices. Individualised learning is emphasised with reading materials provided for students’ reference. Under guidance, students will conduct fieldwork and develop relevant skills such as collection of first-hand information, record their observations by various means and build models/ prototypes for illustration whichever appropriate.

Phase 3: Presentation of learning outcome (3 hours)

 Students will submit reports and other deliverables on their researches by the end of the programme. Reports of good quality will be used in the ICH publications of the host organisation.

 A showcase event will be arranged for students to share their research results and learning experiences. Parents, teachers and other guests will be invited to attend the event.

* In view of the latest development of the COVID-19 pandemic, the programme provider may need to modify the learning and teaching activities as a contingency.
