DYNAMIC ANALYSIS OF CAISSON-TYPE BREAKWATER
UNDER THE ACTION OF
IMPULSIVE BREAKING WAVE PRESSURE
Chuen-Sheng Yang
Professor Department of Hydraulic Engineering
ABSTRACT
A caisson-type breakwater will slide, rotate, or vibrate under the action of impulsive breaking wave pressure with high intensity but with a short
duration. The motion of breakwater under the action of wave pressure has
been analysed with the assumption that the impulsive pressure has a time profile of triangular shape or a damped sine function of time. The magnitude
of impulsive pressure is calculated with the forward momentum of breaking . .
waves; its impulse is constant. The breakwater is considered to be rested
upon an elastic foundation or upon a rigid base. The resuit of analysis shows that the maximum elastic shearing force of the base may reach 2.2 times the maximum intensity of breaking wave pressure. The resonance or overturning may take place under the continuous action of breaking waves.
