紀 會議源起

我們對於十九世紀的英國與美國到底瞭解有多少？這個時代的英美文化是否還是喚起同樣的模糊印象：拘謹保守的仕紳作風、偽善的道德觀、沈悶窒息的家居生活、性壓抑、海外拓殖、因襲舊規的文學、世紀末的頹廢？我們對於這時代文化的探討主要依舊侷限在以跳脫情境的方式來閱讀當時的主要作家，他們無庸置疑地來自於白人、男

性、中產階級（也就是當代所謂「體面」）的社會背景。當然，這種閱讀方式無可避免

地排除掉關於性別、階級、種族等社會文化因素的考量，這些因素對於英美文化形成的

重要性仍有待進一步探索。的確，關於文化的探討應當超越一小撮所謂的「關鍵文本」，

觀照範圍更為廣大的文化論述；即使是所謂的「關鍵文本」也應當置放在文化情境當中來閱讀，畢竟這些文本原來就是因應這個情境而創作的。十九世紀的英美兩國見證了西方文化與經濟上最巨大的變動、擴張、與宰制。一地或一國的人民走出家園前往更廣大的世界的不同場域，與種族上、文化上、階級上的「他者」接觸。對於身體的意識提高了，因為它經常被置放在新環境刺激底下，而且被人們從各種角度加以仔細檢視。創作文本部僅是在紀錄這個轉變的過程，甚至是直接參與其中。人群、資本、理念流竄世界各個角落，交錯成一個權力/知識/慾望的網絡，影響這帝國的核心與邊陲。十九世紀的世界有那麼多的面向，當我們嘗試重建這個如今能影響我們生活方式的歷史時期時，需要新穎、不同的研究方向加以適切考量。我們可能因此會發現，十九世紀不單只是活著一群衣領漿燙的紳士與蓬裙束腹的仕女，在禮教壓制、自以為是的心態下過完富裕但無聊的一生。

Revisiting the Nineteenth Century Conference Theme

How much do we really know about nineteenth-century Britain and America? Do the cultures of the age still conjure up the same old vague impressions about gentlemanly conservatism, moral hypocrisy, oppressive domesticity, sexual repression, oversea expansion, literary routinism, fin-de-siécle ennui? Our studies of the cultures in the century are still largely confined to context-free reading of writers who usually derived from unmistakably white, masculine, bourgeois (i.e., “respectable”) backgrounds. However, such reading inevitably excludes considerations of those socio-cultural factors like gender, class, race, whose significance in the formation of the English and American cultures is yet to be adequately explored. Indeed, studies of the cultures should go beyond a small cluster of “key texts” and reach out for a wider range of cultural discourses; even the “key texts” may have to be read against the cultural backdrops to which these texts originally responded. The nineteenth-century England and America witnessed one of the greatest upheavals, expansions, and oppressions in culture and economy of the West. Local or national subjects ventured away into various parts of the wider world and into contacts with racial, cultural, or class

“others.” Consciousness of the body was heightened when it was constantly brought into new stimulating environments and put under scrutiny from various perspectives. Texts were produced not just to record the experiences but to participate in these changes of perceptions.

People, capital, ideas once flowed across the world and intertwined into a network of power/knowledge/desire that influenced not just the cores but the peripheries of the empires.

So much more of the nineteenth-century world requires new and different scholarly efforts to bring it into consideration in our reconstruction of the historical period that still determined the ways of our world. We may find the nineteenth century more than a time of starched-collared gentlemen and crinoline-bound ladies always leading their materially comfortable lives in a rule-stifling, self-congratulatory way.

會場須知

1. 本會主要使用英文與中文，且為識別之便，請隨時佩掛識別證。

2. 所有該場次主持人、評論人、演講者與工作人員，請於會議前至少五分鐘到達會場。

3. 會議進行中，請勿吸煙與飲食。並請記得關閉手機，以免干擾會議進行。

4. 專題演講時間為六十分鐘，時間分配為：主持人開場為五分鐘，

演講四十分鐘，與十五分鐘聽眾提問討論時間。(依此順序進行) 5.論文發表每場次時間為九十分鐘，時間分配為：

a. 主持人開場為五分鐘。

b. 每位講者為二十分鐘(時間到之前三分鐘響一聲提醒講者，

時間到時則響兩聲表示結束。) c. 每位評論人各有十分鐘時間。

d. 開放十五分鐘供聽眾提問討論，每則問題與其回應分別為兩分鐘。

Conference Protocol

1. Working language is English and Chinese. And to facilitate communication, please wear your conference ID badge at all times.

2. If you are moderators, respondents, speakers or staffs for the session, please arrive at least 5 minutes before sessions begin.

3. During sessions, no eating or smoking is allowed. And please turn off your mobile phone(s) to prevent disturbances.

4. Plenary sessions run 60 minutes. Time limits are: 5 minutes for moderators, 40 minutes for speakers, and 15 minutes for floor discussion (in this order).

5. Ordinary sessions run 90 minutes. Time limits are:

a. 5 minutes for moderators.

b. 20 minutes for each speaker (one ring 3 minutes before the time to remind the speaker and 2 rings to signal the end).

c. 10 minutes for each respondent

d. 15 minutes for floor discussion; 2 minutes for each question and reply respectively (2 rings to signal the end).

6. Roundtable discussion runs 120 minutes: 5 minutes for the moderator, 15 minutes for each panelist, 20 minutes for cross discussion, and 20 minutes for floor discussion (in this order).

Fiction and Drama

Call for Papers: Vol. 18 Issue No.1 (2007)

Fiction and Drama has been published by the Department of Foreign Languages and Literature at National Cheng Kung University since 1989. One of the oldest established journals in Taiwan, it is devoted to the study of both international and Taiwan fiction and drama genres. Beginning with Volume 16, Fiction and Drama has adopted a referee review system; submitted papers will be sent out for evaluation by anonymous reviewers.

Only articles in English will be considered. Please direct your submission to The Editorial Board, Fiction and Drama

Submissions for the upcoming issue will be due at the end of December 2006; they are put into review processes as soon as they arrive.

Manuscript Submission:

1. Each submission should include the following information and items:

(1) Name of the contributor both in Chinese and in Romanized spelling, professional affiliation, current position, mailing address, office and home telephone numbers, and e-mail address; the information should be listed on a separate page.

(2) An abstract of about 300 words in both English and Chinese, along with a list of keywords (not exceeding six) in both languages

2. The contributor should send two printout (hard) copies of the submission along with the digital file stored in an IBM-compatible floppy disk, preferably in Microsoft Word 7.0 format. Fiction and Drama will notify the contributor of the receipt of the submission, but will not return it after the review.

3. Manuscripts should be prepared according to the format specified in the latest edition of MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers. They should be double-spaced and typeset in 12-point Times New Roman.

4. Manuscripts are accepted for review under the condition that the same work has not been published nor is presently submitted for publication elsewhere.

5. Five copies of the journal and fifteen off-prints of the article will be given to the contributor on its publication. No other form of payment or reward is offered.

6. Upon acceptance, the contributor is required to sign an agreement to have it stored in the digital database (www.ceps.com.tw) established by Airiti Co. Ltd., open to the public through paid internet access.
